Earl Morrall, who played 21 years in the NFL for several teams and was a number draft choice by the San Francisco 49ers out of Michigan State, has died at the age of 79.
Morrall was the key figure for the 1972 Miami Dolphins undefeated season as he stepped in for Bob Griese in Week Five. He remained in the line up until Griese returned for the AFC Championship game in Pittsburgh, replacing Morrall at halftime.
A member of six different teams (including the Steelers, Lions, Giants, and Colts) in a career that spanned from 1956 through 1976, Morrall threw for 20,809 yards, and 161 touchdowns against just 148 interceptions. He was a two time Pro Bowler, played in four Super Bowls (winning three), was the NFL MVP in 1968, and the Comeback Player of the Year in 1972.
