Wildcats Improve to 9-0

(La Canada, Ca) – With impatient Monrovia (9-0, 4-0) cheerleaders holding up a sign saying “This shouldn’t take long, 9-0 here we come” prior to the game. It was apparent they were just stating a fact as the Wildcats kept continued to dominate the Rio Hondo League with a 43-7 blow-out over La Canada (4-4, 2-2).

Monrovia quarterback Nick Bueno put all doubt of a close game away with a 81-yard touchdown run with 9:01 to play in the third quarter to extend the lead to 22 points.

Bueno was 10 of 13 for 160 yards and two touchdowns. He was also intercepted by Spartan defensive back Michael Arkfeld. Bueno ran for 189 yards and three scores.

With Paraclete coaches observing from the La Canada sidelines, Wildcat head coach Ryan Maddux allowed Bueno to strut his stuff. Bueno threw to seven different receivers on the night and made some incredible runs at key times during the game.

Bueno’s favorite target on the night was Jordan Trujillo who caught two passes for 59 yards and a touchdown late in the game.

Spartan quarterback Rocky Moore came into the game throwing only two interceptions in seven contests prior to tonight. Moore would end up the night being pressured and sacked four times. He would finish 13 of 25 for 155 yards and touchdown with two interceptions.

Monrovia’s defense was solid all around giving up only 49 rushing yards on the night on 27 carries. Ryan Shurie was the team leader with 42 yards. They also sacked Moore four times on the night.

After going up 15-0 after the first quarter, the Wildcats would strike from 40 yards out as Bueno found tight end/lineman Grant Haggard on a wheel route.

La Canada finally was able to put a drive together, thanks to Bijan Arceo’s fumble recovery on a muffed punt by Charlie Cimmarusti on the Monrovia 23-yard line.

After two good defensive plays by Cimmarusti to make up for his error, Moore found his favorite target Josh Hanson (two receptions for 70 yards) on a 25-yard pass that was out of the reach of Cimmarusti. It was the only points of the night for the Spartans.

Bueno would record his third running score on the night with a 23-yard run to close out the scoring for both teams.

The victory by the Wildcats clinched at least a tie for the league title, while the loss drops the Spartans into a must-win situation against South Pasadena next week.
