(Walnut) – Manny Munoz calmly kicked a 22-yard field goal with four-seconds remaining to save South Hills from being upset by Claremont, 24-22.
Munoz managed to redeem his composure after missing a 27-yard field goal prior to the game winner when the Wolfpack jumped offside with seven-seconds left in the game.
The Huskies nearly squandered an 11 point lead on Jesse Garcia’s third touchdown of the evening when Garrett Fonseca threw an ill-advised pass to Claremont’s Bryce Bradfield at the South Hills 15-yard line. Bradfield returned the interception to the Huskies 4-yard line.
Three plays later, the Wolfpack ran a gadget play as Ryan O’Connor lateraled the ball to Ben Lynch who saw the South Hills cornerback bite on the play and threw a strike to Jordan Goodrich for the go-ahead score at 22-21 with 1:32 remaining in the game.
*** Claremont’s Duy Tran-sampson turned the corner early in the second half to score a 69-yard touchdown run. Tran-sampson ended the night rushing for 202 yards on 19 carries.
*** Goodrich caught six passes for 35 yards and one touchdown.
*** O’Connor went 13 of 17 for 98 yards and one touchdown. He found Ben Lynch for the score with about four minutes remaining in the game to cut the Huskies lead to five.
*** Jacob Olesniewicz put the Wolfpack up 3-0 early in the second quarter.
*** In addition to Garcia’s score in the fourth quarter to provide South Hills a 21-16 lead, he scored from seven and four yards out. Garcia finished with 224 yards on 36 carries.
*** Quinn Cotter was instrumental in the game-winning drive catching four passes to help set up the game winning field goal. In the end he registered seven catches for 66 yards.
*** Fonseca finished the night going 14 of 21 for 104 yards.
*** Both teams combined fro 415 yards rushing but also committed four turnovers.
*** South Hills nearly had a two to one edge on plays from scrimmage. The Huskies were seven of 11 on third down conversions.
*** In addition to Bradfield’s interception in the fourth quarter, he sacked Fonseca for a ten yard loss to set up the ill-advised pass on the next play.
