(Monrovia) – Ayala hit five three pointers in the fourth quarter and outscored La Canada by seven in the final stanza to beat the Spartans 56-41 Monday night in the SGV Basketball Classic at Monrovia High.

The big fourth quarter followed a third in which Ayala only scored four points but LC was unable to take advantage scoring only six of its own. Austin Awosika led the Bulldogs with 19 points while Miles President (cool name) added 16.  Awosika and President did most of their damage in the first half. They combined to score just six points in the second.

Grant Arthur hit a pair of threes and led La Canada with 10. Ben Choi had eight and Koko Kurdoghlian added seven.

Ayala started off hot doubling up the Spartans in the first quarter 22-11. Austin Sandel nailed two threes and Awosika had nine in the quarter.

Arthur warmed up in the second for the Spartans with a pair of threes and had all ten of his points in the quarter. President had six of Ayala’s 13 second quarter points and the Bulldogs went into the break up 35-25.

Neither team could throw a pea in the Pacific in the third. Ayala was two for 12 in the quarter including 0-2 from the free throw line. La Canada wasn’t much better going three for 12 and 0-5 from beyond the arc.

Ayala then caught fire in the fourth to put it away. The Bulldogs hit nine threes overall compared to five for the Spartans.

Ayala is 11-1 overall while La Canada dropped to 7-4.
