(Duarte) – Covina erased a 1-0 deficit with a three run sixth and Princess Nava went the distance to lead the Colts to a 3-1 win over La Salle Saturday in the Duarte Tournament. It was the second time in three days that Covina had knocked off the Lancers and it this time it was good for a third place finish.

Covina beat La Salle 1-0 on Wednesday and it looked the Lancers were going to return the favor as they carried a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning. But Covina rallied for three in the bottom of the sixth and Nava retired the Lancers in the seventh, striking out two of the three batters, to preserve the win.

Nava struck out six overall while walking two. She allowed five hits. She ran into trouble in the first inning when La Salle loaded the bases with one out. Vanessa Dwyer singled home Kolby Deziel who had walked to lead off the inning but that’s all the Lancers could muster. One runner was thrown out trying to score from third and Nava got the last out on a pop up to second. La Salle never threatened again. In the sixth, with two out Paula Damas walked and Dwyer singled again to put runners on first and second but Nava again induced the next batter to pop out.

Dwyer, in the circle for La Salle, was matching Nava nearly pitch for pitch throughout the game. The Colts had opportunities but couldn’t cash in. They had runners on in the first, second, fourth and fifth but didn’t break through until the sixth.

In the inning, Ali Lenoue reached on an error with one out. Samantha Hardwick walked and Nava singled to tie the game. Samantha Medrano then hit a Texas Leaguer that landed in shallow center field and another run scored. With two out Ricki Corvera hit what appeared to be an inning ending pop up but the ball dropped as the La Salle infielders collided for an error giving Covina a 3-1 advantage.

Nava then closed the door.

Dwyer threw a complete game for La Salle striking out five and walking three. She didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning keeping the Covina batters off balance with a strong fastball and a good change. She gave up three hits overall.

Covina improved to 4-0 overall while La Salle dropped to 2-2- both losses to Covina.
