It’s Official: Ruedaflores Retires

Not Even One! Gil Ruedaflores has been saying one more year for a long time, but after 21 he's decided to say goodbye.

(Alhambra) – After 21 years at the helm, Gil Ruedaflores has stepped down as the Head Coach at Alhambra.

“Football is still in my blood. It will always be in my blood,” Ruedaflores said. “But it was time to bring in the young blood. It was just time mentally and physically.”

After coaching different sports and different levels at Alhambra for 12 years, Ruedalfores took over as the football coach in 1989. He thought about stepping down after the 2008 season but missing the playoffs left a bad taste in his mouth.

He returned in ’09 to lead the Moors to a 6-3 regular season, a third place finish in the Almont and a trip to the playoffs. Alhambra played Burbank tough in the first round before falling 21-14. He reached the 100 victory plateau in 2006.

“It was a real close game. We never stopped battling in that one. These kids played hard all year. I’m real satisfied and proud with the way they played. It was a good way to go out,” Ruedaflores said.

Ruedalfores has been coaching football 42 years. He started as an assistant at Salesian High School in 1968 before moving on to the Junior College level several yeas later. Although he has decided to turn over his head coaching duties, he will never be far from the Alhambra football program.

“I think I’ll always be around football,” Ruedaflores said.

A search for a replacement is underway at Alhambra and an announcement should be coming soon.
