Cowboys Edges Conquistadores in Triple OT Thriller

By Joseph Rodriguez

(Chino)- The 36th battle for the Milk Can was one to remember for years to come. Don Lugo came in looking to repeat on last year’s 35-7 shellacking Chino but instead found themselves on the opposite end of a heartbreaking 22-21 loss in triple overtime.

The teams traded scores during regulation. The Conquistadors scored first with 1:51 left in the second quarter when Dane Ford connected with Garrett Rodgers on an eight yard crossing pattern in the back of the end zone. Don Lugo led 7-0 at the half. The Cowboys tied the game 7-7 in the third when Andrew Almazan scored from three yards out. The Cowboys and Conquistadors both went scoreless in the first overtime and traded touchdowns in the second to leave the score tied 14 all going into the third overtime.

An electric crowd was on hand anxiously watching as Chino Coach Jesse Ceniceros made the call to go for two and the win in the third OT. With his offensive unit lined up in its familiar double wing formation Chino was stopped and the celebration was on for the Conquistadors.

But in a game that played out with Hollywood drama it was only fitting that there would be one most twist in this script. A defensive face-mask penalty gave the Cowboys a second  chance they did not waste. Da’creh West would be denied, going straight through the middle of Don Lugo’s “D” for the game sealing score.

The loss is a difficult one for the Conquistadors to take because they seemingly had the game in hand on two separate occasions and could not find a way to close out the Cowboys. At the end of regulation Don Lugo missed a game winning 33 yard field goal to send it into the first overtime. After the Cowboys failed to score on their possession of the first overtime, the Conquistadors had second and goal on the Cowboys 1. Then reminiscentof the Seahawks Super Bowl losing interception from the 1, Don Lugo’s Dane ford was picked off by Willie Morris to send the game into the second overtime.

  • Chino’s Da’Creh West carried the ball 25 times and rushed for 115 yards , 1 rushing TD and the game clinching two point conversion
  • Cowboys QB Angel Herrera was 3/7 for 44 yards and 1 passing TD
  • The Conquistadors Jesse Munguia rushed for 138 yards on 22 carries with 1 rushing TD
  • Don Lugo’s Dane Ford was 8/15 for 138 yards, 1 passing TD, 2 INT’s
  • Chino’s Willie Morris came up big in overtime; intercepting a pass at the one to force a second overtime and hauling in a 19 yard TD pass in the second overtime
  • Chino’s Mailk Abston provided an offensive spark in the fourth as he carried the ball four times for 22 hard earned yards
  • Chino leads the series in the Milk Can rivalry 24-12
  • Chino is at Rowland next week
  • Don Lugo has next week off before heading in to league play against Alta Loma
