(Covina) The Chino Cowboys traveled in to Covina to do battle with the Charter Oak Chargers. The Chargers were not hospitable to their visitors Friday night beating the Cowboys 42-14.

Both teams started off slow and neither team scored until the Charges broke through with 8:51 left in the second quarter. Zion Echols polished off an eight play drive with a two yard run. Jaren Surdo added the extra point for the 7-0 lead.
A little more than six minutes later Charter Oak extended their lead to 14-0 on another Echols run this time from 30 yards away.
The Echols show continued into the second half when he took the kickoff to start the second half at his own two, weaved his way through the Chino special team and outraced the defenders to paydirt.
Trailing 21-0 the Cowboys mounted their best drive of the evening going 87 yards on eight plays. Da’creh West got lose finally got loose and got the score from 12 yards out. The scoring drive was set up on a 75 yard run by Andrew Almazan.
Dareon Nash set the Chargers up for their next score late in the third period taking a Cowboy punt back 56 yards to the Cowboy four. A Chino penalty pushed the ball to the two. One play later, you guessed it, Echols was in the endzone again.
Echols scored once more before the Cowboys could get on the board again to make the score 35-7.
The fina Chino score came on a 40 yard run by Angel Herrera that capped a 76 yard drive.
With 4:44 left in the game, Echols put the final nail in the Cowboy coffin turning the corner, hit the boosters and flying 40 yards for the score. Rumors have it that Echols was going so fast that NASA was tracking him for a short time.
Both teams showed their generous sides in the third. Brown was picked off in the endzone by Malik Abston. One play later West fumbled back to the Chargers. Two plays later Brian Casteel fumbled the ball but recovered back at the Chino 49. Three plays later Charter Oak lined up for a 42 yard field goal that the Cowboy’s blocked to finish off the string of turnovers.
*** Echols finished the night gaining 148 yards on 17 carries and tallying five touchdowns.
*** Almazan was the Cowboys leading ground gainer with 107 yards on seven carries.
*** Kam Brown was efficient on the night hitting on nine of 16 passes for 108 yards.
*** West carried the ball time but only managed 55 yards on the ground.
*** Nash was Brown’s favorite target hauling in four passes for 57 yards.
*** Herrera added 81 yards and a touchdown on the ground but was zero for six passing.
*** Jesse Ceniceros’ double wing offense was able put up 268 yards on the ground but only 14 points to show for the effort.
*** The Chargers stay at home next week and take on a much improved Diamond Ranch squad.
*** The schedule doesn’t get any easier next week for Chino as they travel to Hacienda Heights to take on Los Altos.
