Cougars Come up Short at Humboldt

By Tim Peterson

(Arcata, CA) – Ja’Quan Gardner rushed for a school record 305 yards and three touchdowns on 36 carries to lead Humboldt State to a 34-16 victory over Azusa Pacific Saturday night.

Gardner opened the scoring with a 55-yard touchdown run on the opening drive and the Lumberjacks maintained a 20-3 at the half.

The Cougars scored twice in the second half including a three-yard run by Chad Jeffries that cut the Humboldt lead to 20-9 in the third quarter. But Gardner found the end zone again for the Lumberjacks to make it 27-9 and they were able to keep APU at bay.

Ethan Zeidler had seven receptions for 113 yards for the Cougars but it wasn’t enough. Kurt Scoby rushed for 84 yards on 18 carries, which snapped his three game steak of rushing for at least 150 yards.

APU fell to 3-3 with the loss while Humboldt State improved to 5-0.
