(Montebello) — Montebello quarterback Ryan Rivera tallied 280-total yards and three touchdowns, two in the air and one on the ground, in the Oliers 43-10 Almont opener against visiting Schurr Friday.
The Oilers started the game with a nine play, 91-yard drive that was capped off by Rivera connecting with Sergio Cortez for a 19-yard score. Schurr responded on the ensuing possession, with a Pedro Moreno 25-yard field goal to pull within 7-3 late in the first quarter.
After stuffing the Oilers on a fake punt, the Spartans took the lead five plays later when Miguel Aguero hooked up with Eddie Delgado for a 10-yard score. Schurr now lead 10-7 early in the second quarter.
The Oilers answered back with a 30-yard field goal by Kevin Bravo tying the game at 10 with 4:52 left in the fist half. Following the kickoff, Montebello linebacker Josiah Quiroga picked off an Aguero pass and returned 22 yards to pay dirt.
The Oilers led 17-10 at the end of the first half.
Following intermission, the Montebello defense continued to give Schurr’s offense problems. Johnny Cabanilas picked off an Aguero’s pass and gave the Oilers possession 32 yard line. Three plays later Rivera walked into the endzone on a 50-yard run.
The Oilers added another score after the Spartans muffed the punt on their 2 yard line. On Montebello’s next play, Quiroga bulldozed his way for the one yard run. Later, Rivera added his second touchdown pass.
