Mustangs Prevail In Double Overtime

By Rich Whittington

It is a well known adage that defense wins football games. This fact was again proved Friday evening, as the Salesian Mustangs needed two over time periods to dispatch the St. Francis Golden Knights 27-20 in the Angelus league opener for both schools.

Scoring was at a premium for the majority of the contest, with the first score coming with 1:03 remaining in the first half. The scoring began when St Francis’ QB Miles Bryant scored on an 11 yard keeper. Matt Bazarevitsch added the PAT, to give the

Golden Knights a 7-0 halftime lead.

It would be almost another full quarter before Salesian would get on the scoreboard. The Mustangs scored for the first time with 2:32 in quarter number three, when

Robbie Blosser found Nicholas Pickett for a 27 yard “catch and run” score. The PAT was added by Christian Renteria. After three quarters of play, the game was tied: 7-7.

St. Francis took the lead in the fourth quarter when Bazarevitsch connected on a 22 yard Field Goal. Salesian answered, taking the lead on an 82 yard TD run by

Deommodore Lenoir, which, after failing to convert the subsequent PAT, gave the Mustangs a three point lead, 13-10. St. Francis tied it with 53 seconds remaining in regulation, as Bazarevitsch converted a second field goal, from 43 yards away.

This duel continued through the first over time period, as the teams traded touchdowns. The score after the first OT was tied: 20-20.

In the second OT period, Salesian scored what would prove to be the winning TD, as Felipe Meza scored on a 10 yard run.

The game featured more that its share of great defensive plays. The teams combined for 11 sacks, 2 interceptions, and one forced fumble. Logging multiple sack efforts were Salesian’s Jeremy Gabler (2), Renteria (2), and

St. Francis’ Anthony Khoshrozeh (2).
