Tartans Hold off Colts 48-43

(Glendora, Ca) – Glendora’s Katie Gannon buried a 15-footer from the top of the key to halt Covina’s comeback with two minutes remaining in the game.

The Tartans held off the Colts the final minutes to improve to 12-3 on the season with a 48-43 victory.  The Colts dropped to 9-7 in non-league play.

Glendora managed to use their size advantage to frustrate Covina’s penetrating offense in the first half to go on an 11-1 run to start the second quarter.

“We aren’t a pure shooting team,” said Covina head coach Matt Kearns.  “We rely on penetration and getting to the basket.  Glendora is so big inside and much disciplined with their man-to-man defense.”

Tartan center Sarah Letourneau led the team with 18 points with six coming in the final quarter.    Chelsea Chemla would lead the Colts with 17 points.

The second quarter was the difference in the game as Covina didn’t score a field goal until Marissa Clark put back a rebound with 1:27 to play in the half and stop a 9-0 run.

The Colts would finish with a flurry as Raven Dixon and Vanessa Zapata both scored to cut the lead to five with less than 23 seconds to play.

Letourneau’s easy bucket before the half would extend the lead to seven.

Covina was finally able to solve the height advantage that the Tartans had when Chmela buried consecutive three-pointers to cut the Glendora lead to one midway through the third quarter.

However, every time the Colts got within a possession of taking the lead, the Tartans defense stepped up to make the big play during the second half.

Covina would get to within one in the fourth quarter, but missed opportunities with easy looks and turnovers cost the Colts a chance to either take the lead to draw even.

After Covina’s Jackie Ford scored with 37.7 seconds remaining in the game, Glendora’s Lindsy Vega made two crucial free-throws to close the scoring out.
