The TEN

The TEN

(“The Ten” is not a top ten, but ten items worth being included in The TEN)

1.) The “Godfather” of Mid Valley Sports, Emery “Pete” Peterson (father of Tim) passed away Monday night. It was in “Pete’s” family room, throughout the 1980s, where Barker, Joe T., & Tim watched nearly every Super Bowl, World Series, and NBA Finals match. A Bob Cousy fan and Mel Counts apologist, who loved fast cars, “Pete” put up with a lot but showed us his love. Keep the Peterson family in prayer.

2.) Bellflower alum/Retired Dodger Stadium organist Nancy B. Hefley turns young today.

3.) In the last six years MVS staffer Joe Torosian has attended three La Canada High School basketball playoff games…They’ve lost all three, including last night’s boys loss to San Gabriel Academy, 68-60. “Just stay away,” says former Lady Spartans HC Tamar Hill.

4.) Adrian Gonzalez, Kiké Hernandez, Micah Johnson, Joc Pederson, Yasiel Puig, Corey Seager, Trayce Thompson, Justin Turner Chase Utley and Scott Van Slyke – have already been working out for the better part of a week at Camelback Ranch, tomorrow marks the official report date for physicals for the full-squad. The first full-squad workout will take place on Thursday.

5.) “The old movie critic Roger Ebert worked as a High School sports reporter prior to taking over the film desk, and he always said there’s absolutely NOTHING more exciting than a big-time HS basketball game when everything’s on the line.”—MVS commenter “Roger and Tim”

6.) “How long do you think it would take for today’s PC crowd to destroy The Marx Brothers?”—Dennis Miller

7.) “Conspiracy Day”…at the bottom of today’s TEN is a reprint of The TEN from February 24, 2012.

8.) Hall of Fame (Baltimore Orioles/Los Angeles Dodgers) first baseman Eddie Murray turns 60 today.

9.) Fifty-six years ago today the US Olympic Hockey team was enroute to its first gold medal at Squaw Valley with a 9-1 victory over West Germany.

10.) “Mel Counts was a good steady ballplayer!”—“Pete” Peterson

2.) Red Auerbach and the Boston Celtics paid to have Magic Johnson’s 1991 blood test show positive for HIV.
3.) The NFL hated Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis so much it employed the “Tuck Rule” on Tom Brady’s celebrated fumble in the 2001 playoffs.
4.) Temple City football always wins the coin flip.
5.) NFL covered up “Spygate” because it wanted the New England Patriots—Patriots—to win the title the same season that 911 occurred.
6.) Jude Oliva conjured up the windstorm last fall to delay, by one night, San Gabriel’s semifinal match with San Dimas.
7.) To ensure the league’s success with revenue and high ratings, the NBA conspired to have only five teams qualify for the finals during the 1980’s (Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Houston, & Detroit).
8.) Michigan star Chris Weber was paid off to throw the NCAA Finals against North Carolina in 1993. First by traveling (which wasn’t called) and then calling timeout when the Wolverines had no timeouts remaining.
