Lady Spartans Continue Winning Ways in RHL

(La Canada, Ca) – La Canada took advantage of a 27-point second quarter to easily defeat Monrovia 54-28 in Rio Hondo League play.

The victory improved the Lady Spartans to 3-0 in league and dropped the Lady Wildcats to 1-2.

La Canada used took advantage of numerous Monrovia turnovers in the second quarter to blow open a relatively close game.

After spotting the Lady Wildcats a 6-2 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Spartans were able to put the handcuffs on Monrovia and didn’t allow a field goal for six minutes in the second quarter.

Courtney McCutchan (game high 20 points) and Kristene Hossepian began the onslaught on the Lady Wildcat defense early in the second quarter.  McCutchan used two deadly three-pointers and Hossepian was able to finish the fast-break to help La Canada go on a 13-0 run midway through the second quarter.

By the end of the half, both McCutchan and point guard Tia Chen (15 points and nine assists) scored 18 of the 27 points in the quarter and the Lady Spartans had separated themselves from a struggling Monrovia offense.

The silver-lining to a cloudy offense for the Lady Wildcats was September Offutt’s team high 18 points.  Offutt caused early match-up problems for the Lady Spartans when she was not in foul trouble and able to get many second chance attempts.

La Canada was able to pull further away in the second half when Monrovia went ice cold in the third and fourth quarter and only made six field goals the entire second half.
