All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated.

Whittier Christian (3-1) at Duarte (3-0)

This may be the biggest test so far this season from both teams. The Falcon’s Devon Hemsley is talented and athletic and will be a nightmare for the Heralds to find a way to contain him. On the other side Quinn Commans is flinging it all over the field to the tune of 1,516 yards and 20 touchdowns. This one could end up a real shootout!

Northview (3-1) at Pomona (0-4)

When these two teams met last year in the Mid Valley Division playoffs they put the scoreboard at Covina’s District Field on the verge of tilting. Pomona came out on top of that one 62-55. This year these two teams are going in different directions. The Vikings are riding a three game winning streak and the Red Devils are searching for their first win. They won’t get it here.

Mt. View (2-2) at El Monte (2-2)

The Vikings and the Lions begin league play with equal records against similar competition. Even their numbers offensively for points scored and defensively for points given up are really close. 16 and 27 for Mt. View and 18 and 25 for El Monte. The Lions gain a slight edge as this one is at home but if the Vikings can control the clock and pound the ball that will be the difference.

Rosemead (0-4) at Arroyo (3-1)

It’s been a struggle for the Panthers this year. They’ve allowed 157 points in four games including 47 to Northview three weeks ago. It’s not the usual stout defense that we’re used to seeing from the crew on the corner of Lower Azusa and Rosemead. The Knights meanwhile, except for a hiccup against Hart two weeks ago, have been cruising along. They even managed to get a win even when they didn’t as a tie with Covina in Zero Week was a victory when the Colts forfeited due to an ineligible player. Last week despite suspensions, Arroyo belted Rowland 42-7. Of course we’re continually asked the question will the Arroyo suspensions continue this week? The answer is we don’t know. But it won’t matter, Knights win.

Don Lugo (2-2) at Chino (3-1)

The Cowboys have won three straight racking up numbers we haven’t seen in that part of town for awhile – 50 against Baldwin Park, 62 vs. Hillcrest and 51 in a rout of Los Osos. They do it with a devastating running attack as Andrew Almazon has racked up nearly 1000 yards on his own. Don Lugo is no slouch. The Conquistadores under first year HC Greg Gano picked up two early victories before taking their lumps in the last two. They did however hang with Northview last week before falling a TD short. They’ll hang for awhile here as well but in the end the ground game of Chino will be too much. Cowboys win their fourth straight.

Glendora (1-3) at West Covina (2-2)

The Tartans have fallen on hard times lately. After beating Kaiser in Zero Week, they’ve lost three straight allowing an average of over 38 points per game. West Covina has bounced back after falling in its first two, with victories over South Hills and Schurr. Both teams want a win before heading into league play next week. Glendora has a puncher’s chance but when it comes to punching it’s usually the Bulldogs who do the punching in the mouth. WestCo runs over the Tartans.

Burbank (1-2) at Muir (2-1)
Last Ten Meetings: Muir leads, 7-3
Last Year: Muir, 21-20
The Mustangs got exposed last week. No shame in losing to La Salle, but to lose the way they did was not good. For the Bulldogs the Zero Week victory Monrovia is looking less and less impressive due to the Wildcats continued struggles. They did compete in losses to Canyon and Downey and that gives them the advantage in “The Land of Colitas” this weekend. Bank has a little bit more girth on the offensive line than it has in the past and they will need it to establish a run game. Muir is still fast but mistakes and execution did them in against La Salle. Close game…

Saturday, September 24

Mission Prep (1-2) at Sierra Canyon (5-0)

Last Meeting 2015: Sierra Canyon, 48-10

The Trailblazers are easing sophomore Johnny Hawkins into the routine, Bobby Cole is ripping it up on the ground…and junior defensive end Chris Cannon (36 tackles, 8.5 sacks) is putting a smile on DC Michael Gonzaga’s face…In other seasons the Royals would have been in this contest but right now it looks like they are driving a long way just to get blown out. They haven’t stopped the good teams and gave up 24 points to a down Viewpoint squad. Offensively three-year starter Bryce Fledderman is good, but not good enough to overcome SC this Saturday night.
