(El Monte)–For a few minutes on Friday night Mt. View looked like the world belonged to them. The double-wing was causing fits for the El Monte defense and running back Josue Martinez was gashing his way to another big night.
It was only a matter of time before they broke it open. Then Martinez had a 72-yard touchdown run called back. Later quarterback Jose Pinedo missed a wide open receiver deep…and that was all she wrote for the Vikings.
The Lions scored twice in the second quarter and three times in the fourth for a 34-6 victory over Mt. View.
El Monte quarterback Andrew Ramos completed 14 of 23 passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns. Starring alongside him was the versatile Saul Chavez. The senior wide receiver caught five passes for two touchdowns and added another on a one-yard sneak at the end for the first half.
The win was the third straight for new head coach Eric MacIntyre, who began his EM tenure with a pair of blowouts. For the Viking, after a promising start to 2016, have now taken big hits in successive weeks: Last Friday it was a 35-6 drubbing by Duarte.
The workhorse for Victor Ambruso’s club was Martinez, who carried the ball 30 times for 86 yards. He also provided Mt. View’s lone score when he fired a 27-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Martinez with 22-seconds remaining in the game.
After a scoreless first quarter, Ramos keyed a Lions drive with a pair of scrambles and then capped it with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Chavez.
The Vikings quickly gave the ball back on a three and out. Following a short punt, El Monte was in business at the View 37 with 22 ticks left in the half. A key pass to Chris Dominguez brought the ball to the 11, followed with a 10-yard run by Ramos, set up Chavez for his 1-yard push to paydirt.
In the fourth, it was another 9-yard pass to Chavez, a 3-yard run by Devin Romero, and a 37-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Carillo.
Before the Vikings touchdown on their last drive the previous eight possessions ended with; punt, punt, punt, punt, turnover-on-downs, punt, interception (by Chris Dominguez that set up Romero’s touchdown run), and turnover-on-downs.
Next week El Monte (3-2, 1-0) goes to Pasadena Marshall. Mt. View (2-3, 0-1) host’s Rosemead.
