Falcons Bounce Back Over Glendale

By Juan Carlos Salas

(Glendale) – It was closer than most expected, but Crescenta Valley, (8-4), outlasted Glendale, (2-10), with a 65-62 victory to wrap up a week that saw two losses. The Falcons had their backs against the wall several times throughout the match, but an 18-point performance from Coltrane Powdrill along with 14 points from freshman Cole Currie, held up againast an attacking Glendale squad.

Anthony Tahmazian and David Yetenikyan, who notched 20 and 21 points respectively, highlighted the Nitros’ offense.

From the opening whistle, both teams came out aggressive and trading baskets, quickly ramping the scoreboard to 12-8 in favor of CV with 3:53 left in the first quarter. Even though the Nitros were down, they showed assurance and assertiveness, demonstrated by Tahmazian’s three pointer, which he followed with a steal and an easy layup, bringing Glendale within a point, 16-15, with 1:37 left.

The CV freshman sensation took control in the second half as Currie drowned some amazing shots beyond the arc as well off-balance lay-ups under the basket which extended the Falcon lead to 31-25 with 4:13 left in the half.

Glendale refused to be shut down and with seconds left Yetenikyan notched a 3-pointer to bring his team within one points, 36-35, going into the locker rooms.

With the way both teams played, it was no surprise that the game was this close. However CV lacked a killer instinct to put away Glendale, and the Nitros continued to miss easy baskets and were unable to take over the lead.

The beginning of the second half shadowed the first, as quick baskets by both teams made it 48-43 CV after three minutes which included a brief lead change for Glendale.

The game then went stagnate until late it the quarter when CV’s free throw was responded with Tahmazian’s three-pointer which cut the Falcon lead to 49-46 going into the fourth quarter.

Crescenta Valley showed more control in the beginning of the last quarter, going on a 7-0 run and extending their lead, 59-50, with 4:33 left, their biggest lead of the night. Even though some Falcons shots weren’t falling late in the game, their lead, 61-57, with 1:47 left, was enough to prevent a Glendale upset.
