Joe T.

Joe T…Oh, I’ve always been a Seth Lugo fan!

By Joe Torosian

“I’m not talking about pleasure boating or day sailing, I’m talking about working for a living…I’m talking about sharking!” — Quint

Kick it!

Right off the Top: Has Turner Field been around long enough for us to get verklempt over?

To me, if you need a new stadium after a mere twenty years it must mean you did a poor job building the stadium…Or the stadium was originally built for the Olympics…Gag…I’d want to move out too.

Arroyo beats South El Monte on Friday night, at The Swamp, 12-7…But the real story will be how the Southmen (Too many Eagles in the Mission Valley League) respond to their first setback…

Longtime Rosemead Rebels coaching fixture, Coach Paul Barraza likes South El Monte…

“I also like Buena Park’s SGV coaching staff over St. Francis,” he said.

I would think coaches and parents could Learn a lot.”—John “Coach” Kentera, former sports talk host at Mighty 690 & Mighty 1090

How brutal is football? Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt, 27, is out for the year with a back injury…Remember when former USC linebacker Brian Cushing landed in Houston back in 2009? He was awesome…the injuries mounted…now he’s 29, playing but banged up…and not what he was before…

I know that’s nothing new…but football…it’s for keeps.

Former Arcadia quarterback Myles Carr, who originally signed with Fresno State and spent two years with the Bulldogs, is in his second year as the starting signal caller for D-2, Texas A&M-Kingsville.

In 2015 he threw for 2,293 yards and 21 touchdowns against only 11 picks. Through four games this year, Carr has passed for 1,052 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Former Bishop Amat standout and guest on the old Mid Valley Sports Show, Rio Ruiz picked up his first MLB hit last night with a triple for the Atlanta Braves.

***

On this date in 1989, Bishop Amat had a 17-0 lead over Muir in the third quarter at Kiefer Stadium. Mustang quarterback Demetrice Martin (Coach Meat/DB Michigan State/St. Louis Rams practice squad/Current UCLA DB Coach) hit Lamar Colbert for a 70-yard touchdown. Muir converted the deuce and it was 17-8 going into the final quarter.

Rich Hunt scored on a 2-yard run, and the PAT made it a 17-15 game. Then with three-seconds left on the clock and his receivers going deep, Martin hit running back Sam Williford at his own 40. Williford fought off Lancer defenders and then pitched the ball to Vince Milton who took it the remaining 60-yards to paydirt and a 21-17 Muir victory.

Same night, at North Field, Rosemead quarterback Jesus Huerta threw a pair of touchdown passes to Chang Weisberg and John Vigil ran for two scores in the Panthers 28-15 win over Temple City.

Both Temple City and Muir advanced to the semifinals in 1989.

The Rams fell in the D-7 semis to Lompoc, 48-38, and their troublesome back Napoleon Kaufman who rushed for 212 yards and two touchdowns.

The Mustangs, thanks to Carlton Greer’s 4-yard touchdown run in overtime, defeated Thousand Oaks at Citrus College to advance to the D-2 finals.

A week later Muir played Santa Barbara (at Santa Barbara City College) to a 7-7 tie…It was the Mustangs last title appearance.

Is it just me or does it seem like the NFL Network spends more time on Fantasy Football than they do on real football?

***

Speaking of dominance…Rosemead owns a 40-3 all-time advantage over Mt. View…Temple City owns a 26-0 all-time record over Duarte…

***

Something tells me the Chicago Cubs are cruisin for a bruisin…

***

Dominance one more time…Over the course of the last three seasons, 30 games, Northview quarterback Steven Comstock has accounted for 85 touchdowns…54 passing and 31 rushing…To give that some perspective…Arroyo legend Steven Rivera (2008-2011) played in 44 career games and recorded 110 touchdowns while playing quarterback: 94 passing & 16 rushing…

Monrovia’s Nick Bueno (2008-2010) played in 41 games and accounted for 76 touchdowns…San Gabriel’s Isaac Valdez (2007-2009) played in 34 games and was in on 68 touchdowns.

***

I was asked if I was excited about the basketball season starting up…I laughed so hard you would have thought a Mel Brooks movie was on.

***

Former Temple City quarterback Paul Kosanovich is playing tight end at New Mexico Highlands and through four games has caught six passes for 45 yards and a touchdown.

Also, on the same roster, is former Covina Colts standout Vinnie “The Dude” Venegas. He’s seeing time at wide receiver and running back. He rushed for 615 yards last year.

The Cowboys are 0-4 this season.

***

Last Add New Mexico Highlands: Charlie Cowan, 15-year tackle with the Los Angeles Rams, went to New Mexico Highlands and was a 4th round pick of the Rams in 1961.

From 1966 through 1975, Cowan and Tom Mack anchored the left side of the Rams offensive line. That’s ten seasons…Ken Iman was the center from 1965 through 1974…Joe Scibelli was the right guard for 1961 through 1975…That’s how you build an offensive line…that’s how you have success…

I understand you can’t replicate this in the 21st century-NFL…But what you can do is stop over-investing in quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers and make the priority, every season, the offensive line.

Uggh! This isn’t that hard to figure out.

Did you know that Montebello has won 15 consecutive Almont League games?

***

Speakes2Midbits (same as ‘Tidbits’)
Midbits: Nick Saban has made Clay Helton an offer to join his staff at Alabama after this season…He’s going to be the Juice Box Boy…

Midbits: Tim Tebow hit a home run in his first professional at-bat but Trent Dilfer and Colin Cowherd don’t like his mechanics and say the Mets won’t be able to win with his style of hitting.

Midbits: Anyone see Survivor last night? Michelle…on the Millennials is a killer…

Midbits: Debt free college? Why not debt free mortgage as well…

Midbits: When does Mike Scioscia leave the Angels? The day after the season ends or does he hang around through November?
