Good Afternoon!
T-Minus-210 Days until “The Mid Valley Classic”
I’ve been ordered by anonymous, but loyal Fanview Lite, readers to make the case for San Gabriel Matador Arthur Brown.
While never disputing the kid’s talent its been tough making an argument for him in the past because of injuries and a lack of eye-popping numbers.
But facts are Brown is a two time, first team Almont League selection at both linebacker and safety. Checking with a few area coaches they really like this guy and would love to have him. His family has a football background and comes in at 6’0” 190 Lb.
Okay, I’m sold. But, if I may be so bold as to make a plea to the SG Administration and Hiring Committee let me say: “Make it a requirement your new head football coach move Brown to tailback. You’re going to have a rookie at quarterback in 2010 and the dude’s going to need the kind of help a hard nosed Brown can provide.”
Monrovia’s Josh Lowden will be guest hosting the Mid Valley Sports Show this Tuesday night. (7:PM www.midvalleysports.com)
Our special guest that night will be Humboldt State bound Kohl Adams-Hurd from Burroughs High School.
If all I had to do to get Gabrielino affection was put them in as a poll option for team of the decade I would have done it a long time ago. I have this image of Steve Swanson asking a class to pull out their cell phones, to click on, and vote for the 2000 squad.
The latest from the Mead: “Rosemead is doing fine working out and getting ready to compete this season!” Says HC Matt Koffler.
Arroyo has Steven Rivera coming back as a starter with two years of varsity experience under his belt, but other than Mike Vasquez in the backfield and the underrated Anthony Miller at wide receiver what are his options?
“We’ve got a few guys at wide receiver we are going to look at besides Miller,” said Arroyo OC Chris MacMillan. “We’re talking about moving Robert Thome (Vasquez’s backup last year) to wide receiver. He’s got good hands and decent speed. He could be a “tweener”, sharing time at both. Hunter Duran is the front runner to take (Chris) Rodriguez’s spot. He was our fourth wide out last year. Couple other names, Alexis Aceves, Mike Amaya, David Guerrero,Joe and David Hernandez, all were on the team last year and will be in the mix this year… Or we could just pound the ball with Vasquez for 2,000 yards!”
Covina HC Darryl Thomas likes what’s happening so far in 2010 with his Colts: “Billy Livingston is returning next year at the quarterback position and is doing a great job in the off-season. He is a football junkie; he would practice everyday of the year if you let him.”
Covina will match up in Zero Week with West Covina at the WC, then come home for two weeks to play Gladstone and El Monte. In Week Three they travel to Walnut to play the Mustangs. They will have a bye the final week of the regular season.
The Colts schedule, of course, was adjusted with the addition of Nogales to the Valle Vista League, making it a seven school concern.
Corn Dawg wasn’t the only one to ask if we could do a basketball version of the recently completed Mid Valley Draft for football. Here’s how I see that going.
“With the the first pick of the 2010 Mid Valley Basketball Draft, the New Jersey Nets select: Sandra Gutierrez, center, El Monte.”
The guys around the table will say this is an excellent selection, Gutierrez gives the Nets a presence in the middle to build around.
“With the second pick of the 2010 Mid Valley Basketball Draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves select, Evelyn Ramirez, forward, Rosemead.”
The guys around the table will say Ramirez gives the T-Wolves a legitimate scoring threat and perhaps the best finisher in the draft.
“With the third pick of the 2010 Mid Valley Basketball Draft, the Golden State Warriors select; Some guy from Bonita.”
Sorry, a basketball draft wouldn’t work…all due respect to ‘Some guy from Bonita’.
Stay thirsty my friends…
