Lady Panthers Extend League Streak to 15

By Corey Kwok

(Rosemead) — Having already clinched back to back Mission Valley league titles, the Rosemead girls, (18-4, 9-0), played a smothering defense to beat Arroyo 42-27 Wednesday.

The Lady Panthers held Arroyo scoreless the initial two minutes of the first and fourth quarters and the first 3:16 of the second and third. The Lady Knights fell to 14-11 and 6-3 in league.

The win was the Mead’s 10th straight and 15th in a row during MVL play dating back to January 28 of last year. In 24 league games dating back to January 30, 2008, Rosemead has lost three games by a combined margin of four points.

Rosemead’s Evelyn Ramirez matched all of Arroyo’s points during the first half and had accounted for 13 of her team’s 20 points at the break. The Lady Panthers led 20-16 at the half. Ramirez poured in another 10 in the second half and finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds, 7 steals, and a blocked shot.

Melody Gauthier, (5 rebounds, 2 assists), chipped in 12 which included jaw dropping bombs from 29, 31, and 23 feet out. She finished 3 for 4 from long range before capping the night by racing inside for a lefty layup. Jeanne Tran scored 5 and had 5 boards. Sydney Hua added a deuce.

Melissa Perez, (8 points), hit a pair of treys in the first quarter and Joanna Reyes added another near halftime to pull the Lady Knights within four. Reyes led Arroyo with 9 points. Perez added a team best 6 rebounds and also had 3 steals. Marzjele Holguin had 5 caroms.

The two teams were even in the second and third quarters as they each scored 13.

Rosemead quietly put the game away with a 10-3 run for a 38-24 lead with just under six minutes gone in the fourth. Arroyo added its last swish of the game as Perez dished to Reyes for a three at 2:04 to play.
