The TEN

The TEN

(“The TEN” is not a top ten but ten items worth being included in “The TEN”)

1.) NFL Hall of Fame 2017 Class to be announced this Saturday night.

2.) Former San Gabriel cornerback Charles Hallinan turns 28 today. Hallinan was one half (along with Marquez Dixon) of the Matadors famed “Cornerblacks” which became controversial when Mid Valley Sports wrote about it in 2005.

3.) “Sad to hear of Musburger’s last time at bat; it makes me wonder how I’ll take it when Peterson types his last words on this site.”—MVS commenter “Passing On”

4.) On this day in 2008, the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots 17-14 in Super Bowl XLII. Eli Manning is named MVP.

5.) “If you were born white, you automatically have a monstrous advantage — educationally, economically, culturally, in this society and all the systemic roadblocks that exist, whether it’s in a judicial sense, a neighborhood sense with laws, zoning, education.”—San Antonio Spurs HC, Greg Popovich in an ESPN interview.

6.) New England HC, Bill Belicheck is 25-10 in post-season career…24-9 with Tom Brady. Bonus points if you can name the other quarterback who picked up a win for Belicheck in the playoffs.

8.) Los Angeles Dodgers in talks with former San Francisco Giants reliever, Sergio Romo.

9.) El Monte alum/former American League MVP, Fred Lynn turns 65 today.

10.) On this day in 1959, rising American rock stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson are killed when their chartered Beechcraft Bonanza plane crashes in Iowa a few minutes after takeoff from Mason City on a flight headed for Moorehead, Minnesota.

@NWO @ Joe: Not smart. What if they called themselves ‘My N-word” like the rappers have popularized and has been accepted in today’s culture or maybe the “Skin Head Brigade” of a popular culture. If young boys wish to promote that image then it is up to them to promote it on social media. No Bueno for a high school sports outlet even if Mom,Dad and coach were chill with it. Saying the admin was ridiculous “and having a stroke” was way over the top and more so today. Still is controversial and nothing to be bragging about. Plenty of other venues to be non PC.

From Joe T.: …But the “N-Word” was not what they called themselves…The admin was RIDICULOUS AND OVER THE TOP…disagree with you totally…

I was thinking of Drew Bledsoe, who played a crucial role in their victory over Pittsburgh in the AFC Championship game during the 2001 season. As it turns out, he played the majority of the game, but he did not start.

Can you re-post the article from #2?

From Joe T.: Regarding the “Cornerblacks”…We were told by the then coaching staff at SG that Dickson and Hallinan began calling themselves that…We included it in one or two game stories…and I dropped it into a column. A VP at the school saw it…had a stroke…called in the boys who said it was no problem…called the parents who said it was no problem…and then the Mid Valley News was given an official phone call to not use the term “Cornerblacks” anymore… It wasn’t my first experience with PC-Academia but it might have been the most ridiculous…I still laugh about it…when players, team, coaches, parents, fans had no problem with it…a lunatic in a bubble claimed moral outrage…We no longer have any of these articles or columns..sorry.

P.S. When some Chinese-American players at Temple City heard about this…they wanted us to call their backfield “The Orient Express”…Out of peace for the TC coaching staff and our editor at the time…we never went with it.

I won’t answer #6, except to say that the man earned his ring that year, and it was a fitting end to a solid tenure with the Pats. I’m a little more curious about who was under center when Belichick had his only playoff loss without Brady.
