From watching the Lions these last two seasons, Coach Urena has a long career ahead of him. El Monte will be a small dot on his resume when things are all said and done. As for other reasons, I doubt they had to do with Coach Urena. Successful schools do not let go of teachers that have potential, and Championship coaches, who do not recruit, accomplish these things by being great teachers of their sport. A successful Admin, then cultivates those attributes into a successful PE teacher. It’s obvious to all of us observing El Monte Athletics that the Administration is weak and is not an asset, but a hinderance to the success of the programs.

Since you clearly have inside information how did he fail as a PE teacher?

This was his first year teaching. I hadn’t realized, this makes the decision even worse. Doesn’t it take several years for a teacher to receive tenure? Here you have a young man who can clearly coach, which means he is a learner, and you had at worse one more year to train him in your stellar PE department, yet you choose to let him go. Not only are you incompetent, but it again proves how lazy this Administration and AD are.

Your embarrassing yourself. The guy taught PE not Chemistry. He’s a championship coach, probably not to difficult to invest in him and make him a good PE teacher. Can’t wait to see you at CIF game!

Let us understand one thing, Coach Arena’s job at El Monte is that of a teacher, he failed in that position pure and simple. His success on the Diamond is an after thought. Education is tantamount to success, not the other way around. And this idea that the AD is not at the games is inaccurate. She’s attends more athletic events, along with the Principal and Vice Principal, than any other educator from the school. So lets cut her and the administration some slack.

I didn’t realize El Monte had such high standards for PE Teachers. The PE currículum must have really changed since I was in school. What a joke. I think the Secretary, I mean AD, should spend less time blogging and more time at games.

Urena was hired as a teacher in addition to being baseball coach this year. Word is he didn’t do his job in the classroom. Being that he was a first year teacher at EMHS, he wasn’t tenured and was let go from his teaching position as a result.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Chris Berman and family at this tragic moment. We also offer our sympathies to all who have been approached about the SG coaching job: don’t take it as an affront, it’s just desperate people grasping at straws.
