South Pasadena Derails Gabrielino

By Corey Kwok

(South Pasadena) – The 2010 season began on a high note for first year head coach Anthony Chevrier and South Pasadena as the Tigers roared for nine unanswered runs en route to a 9-2 win over visiting Gabrielino Friday in the Arcadia Elks tournament.

Joey Sloane led off with a walk and arrived at third after Brendan Campbell reached on an error and Angel Acosta’s fielder’s choice. Keith Clapp then lifted a sacrifice fly to right that plated Sloane for a 1-0 Gabrielino lead after one.

South Pasadena began to apply pressure and take control as the game progressed.

With two outs in the second inning, consecutive singles by John Moreno and Matt Lok put two runners on but Tyler Ryan’s collect and flip to Brandon Perry neutralized the threat.

Tigers’ starting pitcher Anthony D’Oro began inning three with ease as it took four pitches to get two outs, but the Eagles stayed afloat once again. Clapp ripped a double down the left field line and scored on a Vinnie Albelo RBI single to center. Andrew Valdez made it a string of three Eagle hits and they went up 2-0.

D’Oro settled down and earned the win with six innings of five hit ball. Ke Zeng finished up in the seventh with back to back Ks before a walk was followed by a game ending seven pitch strikeout.

George Adamson led off the Tigers’ half of the frame with a walk and a theft of second. Corey Richards followed with a bloop single before Brian Swanson’s sacrifice bunt moved them to prime scoring position. Ryan then poked one to shortstop but the ball was overthrown into dead ball territory. Ryan was awarded second base and scored during the following at bat on a Tony Vieller drive. Vieller finished 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs and a walk to lead the Tigers’ offense.

Gabrielino starting hurler Angel Acosta regrouped to pitch a perfect fourth inning, but it unraveled from there on as South Pas picked up four runs on three hits and two errors. Acosta was relieved by Albelo in the fifth.

Acosta finished with eight strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings. He allowed 6 hits and 7 runs, only one of which were earned.

Weather permitting, Gabrielino (0-1) will take on St Francis Saturday night at 6:00 PM at Jackie Robinson Field and then Tuesday afternoon 3:15 PM at home against Pasadena Poly.

South Pasadena (1-0) will stay home to face Western Christian of Upland Saturday morning at 11:00 AM before hitting the road to face reigning Montview league champion Sierra Vista on Tuesday at 3:15 PM.
