Cathedral’s Young Transferring to Mater Dei

Cathedral QB Bryce Young to transfer to Mater Dei.

By Tim Peterson
(Los Angeles) – Cathedral quarterback Bryce Young will transfer to Mater Dei and will be at the school for spring drills multiple sources have confirmed.

The sophomore threw for 3,431 yards and 41 touchdowns with just 3 interceptions this past season as Cathedral won the Angelus League title and advanced to the second round of the CIF playoffs.

Mater Dei just completed a perfect 15-0 run in which it finished with a 52-21 win over Concord De La Salle in the State Championship.

@ Anonymous: Thanks for the information. I had wondered whether family issues were involved in Kurt’s case.
Your answer could explain why CIF allowed him to play the entire 2013 season at Monrovia. I have to think that the County of Los Angeles should’ve taken action to provide a more stable environment for Kurt once his moving around began.
The media has reported in past months and years about the county’s spotty record in conducting oversight of foster homes and “problem parents.”
I’m still concerned that Kurt’s case might’ve set a bad precedent regarding high school athletic transfers. I hope it remains an anomaly.

For those asking about Kurt Scoby transferring around.. he was a foster child that moved from house to house after his mother passed. This continued in high school as he was constantly moving in with a new family all the time. That explains all of the transfers for those that did not know.

Hey, are we having fun yet?
Some things are worth talking about at length; we can’t condense everything into a Twitter tweet. Even a discussion of high school football can have a little depth and complexity to it.
This is one of several things that I have a passion for. A couple of others are teaching and politics. As another commenter on MVS said some time ago, it’s called multitasking.
Why do things halfway when you actually have a shot at making an impact?

@ ?: Dude, I have a journalism degree; I can actually write a lot of material in a couple of hours. I also edit my writing to make sure that it’s sensible and stays within the facts. (And, as I’ve already said, feel free to let me know if I’m wrong about something.)
You previously criticized my use of pertinent stats, and now you say that my opinions are “diluted” because I have so many of them? You’re trying to have it both ways.
It’s all about substance, my friend, and I believe that what I have to offer is relatively good. I’ll admit to working hard at it, though my words are not inherently more golden than those written by others. I don’t have nearly the time or energy to keep track of which ones are my “personal favorites.”

I’d like to compliment the excellent work of some of my fellow commenters, such as Gordon Gekko, Three Blind Mice, Friday Knights, Pac 5 Scout, Colt 74, and at least a couple of the individuals who post anonymously. They have a lot to say, and they keep it interesting.
And, kudos to Tim Peterson, the recently-departed Joe Torosian, and their colleagues. They have a good thing going here at MVS; they’re informative and they make it lively, too.

By the way, substitute teaching usually isn’t a full-time gig for me because the long-term assignments are few and far between. However, I’ve been fortunate enough to work over 75% of the time so far this school year.
But, the daily pay for subs is only about half of what regular teachers get, so that’s why I have a second job. I assure you that both of my jobs are “real jobs;” I work hard at what I do, and I earn my money.

I’m sorry I had to go a bit long again, but I had to dispel a few of your ill-informed remarks. Don’t make bizarre assumptions about people you know very little about.
I truly hope you have a pleasant day. I’ll see you around.

Sour mood? hardly. Though you state you never claim to know everything it does not mean your not a know-it-all. To me that type of person is the one that offers so many opinions that they are diluted of any real meaningful impact. That you can conjure up comments on so many teams and activities has to be time consuming unless you just type without thinking, assuming all your thoughts are golden words to be savored by all. I’m curious, which one of your comments in just this thread alone is your personal favorite. Mine is your informative “MVS time stamps are still an hour ahead” 2nd place “I’m on winter break from teaching” but you are a sub just filling in right? Well enjoy your time off? Or good luck getting a real job. Feliz ano nuevo.

@ Anonymous: You have a lot of interesting stuff there. I appreciate the response.

    Just a few quick things:
    1. I expect Bell Gardens to be a playoff contender for years to come. The Lancers got close last year, in only their second season after Coach Beltran took over the program.
    2. I was surprised that Monrovia beat San Marino for the Rio Hondo League title last season; the Titans must have been down a little talent-wise.
    3. WR/DB/KR Jeremiah Hartfield’s transfer from Crenshaw High to Schurr struck me as odd. Unless his family moved, why would he want to leave Crenshaw, a perennial contender for the L.A. City Section Division I title, to play for only one season at Schurr?

Yeah, high school football fans in this area have a lot to talk about. Happy New Year.

Great response Mr. Vroman. Perfect way to answer a sarcastic question. I’ll try to fill in the others:
Bell Gardens- Beltran doesn’t have the horses he had at La Serna but they did show drastic improvement from 1 year to the next and expect them to improve again.
Pioneer- They should dominate the new 605 league. No reason why they shouldn’t compete.
Monrovia- Won league even on a down year. As much as Monrovia fans don’t want to admit it, they don’t have the same kind of fire power they had in recent years.
Montebello- 4 league titles in 4 years. That’s pretty darn good. But someone please tell Coach Gonzalez to stop letting dads on the field.
El Rancho- Community has high expectations but no one is more competitive and hard working than Coach Medrano. They’ll have good years and bad years but will always be competitive as long as he’s there.
Gabrielino- Coach Sanin has been there a while and deserves credit for continuing to Coach for those boys.
Schurr- When you recruit big time players from out of the area and your in a neighborhood league, you better win league & CIF. They underachieved this past season.
Arroyo- They just keep marching on. Will probably be moved up to at least d-10 this year if not d-9
Salesian-Major demographic shift since their HC left. Back to being the Salesian we’ve known years prior.
Downey- Great program with plenty of athletes. They recruit but at least they’re in a division with others who do the same.
San Marino- Hobbie is the best Coach in the SGV and its not even close. When he has athletes like a couple years ago, they will dominate. No athletes and they will still compete.
Temple City- What a great turnaround the Rams has under Coach Saxon. Hope to see it continue!

@ ?: I apologize if I caught you in a sour mood. I’ve never claimed to know everything, and I’m thankful for the gift of every new day, because it’s an opportunity to do and learn more.
I’ve observed and reported on high school football in the Los Angeles area for nearly three decades. I enjoy having intelligent dialogues with people who share my interest in this sport and its participants.
I owe a debt of gratitude to the coaches and players I’ve had the chance to work with or see in action. I don’t think that sharing what I’ve learned is a bad thing, and I welcome the knowledge and perspectives that others have to offer.
Yes, I do considerable research on our topic. When I have the audacity to express some opinions, I try to back them up with verifiable facts.
If you disagree with me about anything, that’s fine as long as you have the courtesy to explain why. I’m willing to be educated because, after all, I don’t know everything.

Oh, since you asked (sarcastically) for my thoughts:

Alhambra: We underperformed this past season, and we have to improve. Got it.
Keppel: The Aztecs might have to go to 8-man football if they can’t get more players to come out for the team.
San Gabriel: I wish Coach Encinas the best of luck in rebuilding the Matadors’ program. It’ll be hard work, but I think he has a chance.
“Alhambra Jr. High”: There aren’t any junior high schools in the Alhambra district. We have K-8 elementary schools.
Cathedral High: The Phantoms actively recruit players, and they just named a new head coach. We’ll see where all of that takes them.
Donald Trump: He’s a lousy president who probably won’t last four years in the White House. I hope and pray that we survive his rantings and ravings.

I don’t know much about the other stuff that you listed, but I wouldn’t mind hearing from those who do.
It’s not like we have local newspapers that thoroughly cover high school sports any more; this site has increasingly become our main source of news about prep sports. I like to contribute what I believe might be of interest, even if you’re one person who isn’t interested.

I hope you have a nice year, too.

@ He Hate Me: Maybe Kurt had a severe case of wanderlust? I have no idea what was going on with him or his family, or as to who else might have been involved in all of that moving around.
I’d like to suggest a few possible motivations for student-athlete transfers: moving to a “bigger stage,” and/or promises of money, connections with college scouts, and athletic scholarships.
I hope that at least some transfers are largely motivated by academics. Learning is the reason why schools are supposed to exist in the first place.
High school football in particular is a business. It’s been that way for a long time, but I believe it’s become worse in recent years. It seems that the folks who run CIF have pretty much deregulated everything. I think the situation is getting out of control.

I have to add a disclaimer before I go: MVS’s time stamps are still an hour ahead; they never “fell back” when we went to Pacific Standard Time.

PREP FOOTBALL TRANSFERS & RECRUITING: ARE THEY OUT OF CONTROL?

I’d like to contribute three case studies regarding the impact that player transfers have had on local high school programs. We can also talk about what I consider to be the underlying recruiting, which mainly goes on behind the scenes, but not always.
The following are among the higher-profile transfers in recent years:

Running back Kurt Scoby—I’m willing to bet that his case has been the most extreme example of “transfermania” in the history of the CIF Southern Section. Scoby was enrolled at five different high schools in 2013, and Monrovia turned out to be his final stop.
Inexplicably (in my opinion), CIF not only allowed Scoby to play for the Wildcats, but he got to participate in all 13 games his senior season.
At Monrovia, Scoby showed why he attracted so much attention, as he rushed for 2,206 yards and 35 touchdowns. (He caught four TD passes as well, so he ended up averaging three scores a game.)
Scoby’s efforts helped propel the Wildcats to an 11-2 season, which ended with a one-point loss to Paraclete in the playoff semifinals.

Quarterback Jorge Reyna—As a sophomore at Downey High, Reyna was one of the main reasons for the Vikings’ CIF championship run in 2012.
However, after the Vikings suffered a first-round playoff loss the following year to end up 6-5, Reyna transferred to Pasadena for his senior season.
My question (and probably everyone else’s) on that move is, why? The Bulldogs, who had perennially finished in the bottom half of the Pacific League standings, went 4-6 with Reyna at QB in 2014.
In the meantime, Reyna’s previous school, Downey, reloaded and went all the way to the CIF Division V title game. The Vikings, who lost to Crescenta Valley in a memorable championship matchup, finished 10-4 that season.
I wonder if the folks at Downey High ever talk about how well their team might have done had Reyna stayed there for one more year.

Running back Gevontray Ainsworth—He rushed for more than 1,400 yards as a junior at Covina High in 2011. The Colts went 11-2 that year, their season ending with a loss to Monrovia in the Division XI semifinals.
Ainsworth then played his final season at Monrovia, where he ran for over 1,300 yards in 2012 and helped the Wildcats win their second consecutive CIF championship.

    *Player stats courtesy of MaxPreps

I can bring up a lot of other examples, but these should suffice for now. I hope everyone has a happy 2018!

CHS hired from within. What a shocker! Lol
New coach, a different approach, same methods, no real change. The beat goes on.

The new era begins and it’s campaign message outta be worth a few laughs. If CHS would just hire a real football coach they would rule D2. As mentioned by some before it’s not really a strong academic school and it shows.

CHS retains it’s existing image and is still open for business. “Greed is good.”

Cathedral has nothing to do with arroyo and never will. Kids come to Cathedral for a better Education or they know somebody there. Cathedral does not go to El Monte to recruit anybody. Marcos Lopez was a childhood friend of Andrew Tovar. He made The choice to Transfer to Cathedral. The same for Cam Johnson He made the choice to come nobody twisted their arms.
