@Too the point, they lost 36 seniors the year before. Only had 3 returning starters, which was probably a major reason the old coaching staff left. Opposing coaches predicted they’d be lucky to win 2 games early in the summer. They won 7 and made the playoffs and they’re losses were to Glendora, Charter Oak, Diamond Ranch And Moorpark who made the finals. I think that’s pretty good.

What did Los Altos do? They had one hell of a passing season in spring and summer and then started out the season on fire! Then when it counted they sputtered into a 1st round loss! Everybody on this blog speaks to highly of Urias and Spathias…WHY???

Her kid even got an award and he doesnt even go to LA anymore. Shame on the whole program. I’m saddened I have 4 more kids that have to go through this program.

You saw Spathias and Urias there talking to Mooney? I guess you heard what said as well right? By all accounts momentum has swung to LA? Lol what a dweeb. Did either of the 3 individuals tell you that he’s leaning toward LA? Oh oh you just saw them there. BTW, how does Frank Gallardo feel about schools making pitches to coaches on SEM grounds? lol “I seen it” classic brown noser

He showed his good coach qualities by not attending the boys banquet. The last time he spoke to any of the boys was at the Moorpark game it’s ridiculous. Spathias and Willams by far have shown the most care and concern for the boys.

Spathias and Urias were at SEM last week to make a pitch to Mooney. The interest is real if Mooney doesn’t land the Monrovia gig. Given his baggage a HC spot is unlikely. Mooney momentum has swung to LA by all accounts. That would be huge.

Yes, free speech is protected. Agreed, that we need to teach our kids to ask questions, and even challenge authority respectfully when appropriate. When a teacher tells a student not to wear anything military in his classroom that is a violation of the students first amendment rights to free speech. As a Government teacher Salcido should know that, and he’s definitely getting challenged now.

Glad to hear Medrano is stepping up for the Veterans, evidently there is hope on that campus! When the time comes post a link on how to donate and I’d be happy to that cause.

Aram Tolegian posted that Arcadia and Mike Mooney was a done deal. however, Fred Robledo posted Arcadia HC Policky stated there was interest on both sides but nothing was final. Safe to say M.M will have no shortage of job offers. I find it odd that a school like SEM would cut ties with such a talented coach. Then to cite philosophical differences…strange. M.M must be replaced, Good Luck lol. I can tell you that FG has earned the right to run whatever offense he sees fit for his team.

    @FridayKnights….
Yes plenty of kids attend a continuation school and bounce back. However, athletes are a bit different. in order for a kid to moved to such a school means behind credits which means failing classes which points how the hell was this kid eligible to begin with. How was this kid a “captain” for his team? I have a ton of respect for Jim Singiser but it seems to me hes gone soft in his golden years. Been a lot shady behavior from Arroyo football players the last couple of years.

on the El Rancho topic… Free speech is protected, even if you don’t like the message. Parents need to step up and be the primary instructors in their childrens lives. Teach them what an idiot sounds like and how to deal with such wrong statements. Some of Americas finest students attend West Point or Annapolis. I would hope my son or daughter would counter Salcidos statement with their own opinion. that would make me proud.

I would imagine the only delay in showing the door to Salcido is in figuring what the district stands to lose in attorney fees and/or payoff money that will necessarily go along with the ouster. Shame that there is no mechanism for compensating the other teachers at ER –or the people of Pico Rivera–for the loss of moral credibility this has cost them.

My take on the Salcido thing:

He is a popular teacher amongst current and past students because of his teaching style that engages dialogue and discussion and doesn’t just teach from a book. The fact that he was a former mayor and council member probably made him feel untouchable and is ultimately what is bringing him down.

His rant was extremely to the left and he simply went about it the completely wrong way and went way too far. If the message was get better grades so you can go to college and not have to resort to the military then ok valid argument as minorities from Pico Rivera are usually highly sought after vs kids from higher income areas such as San Marino. The part about they are the lowest of the low dumb sts was extremely ignorant to say as there are plenty of highly talented and intelligent individuals in the military past and present. What he said not only was ignorant but extremely divisive as many people in Pico Rivera are not at eachothers throats, ER students are constantly being harrassed on Twitter and Instagram and truly we do not deserve this. I’m hopeful that the man resigns and avoids the district having to go to battle with the union and attorneys.

@ Colt74: Being positive role models and teaching children how to successfully function in today’s world have to be two of the greatest accomplishments for parents and teachers.
Your last comment is funny, but there’s some truth to it. There have been some times where I’ve had a beer or two after a day of teaching. Never discount the value of a mild sedative.

  29. January 29, 2018 - 10:38 pm | Permalink

    Thanks Ron.
    Hug your kids every day
Tell them you love them at every opportunity…especially if it will embarrass them.
Teach them that the first person that should be standing up for them is themselves.
ASK them about how they feel about issues of the day. And their opinions. It’s the only way you will find out your grade from parenting.
Mine don’t have to always agree with me, but I try to let them know exactly WHY I may not agree with their train of thought. My kids have changed my way of thinking on more than a couple of occasions…but also just like every other parent there have been times where I told them that their azz sucks buttermilk thru a straw….because…well….it did.
But if I wanted to raise sheep I would have moved to New Zealand.

    🙂
My opinion on teachers is that there are 6 out of 10 good ones and every teacher should get a coupon each day for a free drink at their local bar. And they can save them up to be used after parent teacher conferences.

@ Colt74: Well said. I agree that parents can and should be the best teachers of all, especially when it comes to imparting values like honesty, integrity, courage, and compassion.
There are also many good teachers staffing our school classrooms. They teach their subject matter well, and they serve as moral beacons to students who lack good parents, or who have no parents at all.
The ability to question authority is important, especially in cases where authority is being misused. In my opinion, it’s equally important to do that questioning on grounds that are distinctly legal or moral in nature, as opposed to what is personally expedient.
It’s always nice to hear from you. Keep up the good work.

Being ex military I have to support that nut-jobs freedom of speech. It’s a reason we serve.
As a parent I taught my daughters to not be afraid to speak up, and to not be afraid of confronting authority if it goes against their beliefs.
If you are leaving most of what your kids learn to the schools you are doing them a disservice. Teach them to challenge authority and to speak up if someone is spewing garbage. I watched the video and most the kids just laughed. Did not hear 1 kid speak up against the azzhat.

I’m generally left-of-center in my politics, but not on every issue. I support policies and actions that I believe benefit both our national interests and those of the greater majority of people in this country.
As a loyal Democrat, I still respect what rational, moderate conservatives have to offer, whether they’re Republicans, Libertarians, or independents. I’ve also found many liberals or progressives like myself to be fair-minded and considerate people.
My assessment is that Salcido is an ignorant and bigoted individual; he just happens to come from the leftist side of the political spectrum. In my opinion, Salcido needs to be suspended or fired for promoting hatred and intolerance. His blatantly distorted view of history and current events is also highly problematic for me.
No political party or ideology has a monopoly on either virtue or demagoguery.
I join Gordon Gekko in thanking the members of our military services, and veterans, for their service on behalf of all of us. It’s our obligation to look after them; that includes electing presidents who will not send them to war needlessly.

    @Gordon Gekko,

I agree that this “teacher” should not have included any personal biases nor should he have tried to influence these impressionable young students one way or the other. I do think it is important to acknowledge all perspectives of an issue though (something this Salcido guy obviously knows nothing about) and let the young minds formulate their own opinion.

Don’t forget that influencing young minds through propaganda and indoctrination is not strictly a leftist technique. Those strategies are used by the extreme Left AND Right. Key word being ‘extreme.’ Hitler hated communism but he also went “after the young, confuse[d] them and then [took] control.”

This Salcido guy knows exactly what he’s doing. This guy is not teaching he’s manipulating young people with some facts about WW2 with his opinions about the US Military. He didn’t give an explainstion to the kids about the military policy used Vietnam. He didn’t explain why the Russians beat the US, Brits and Canadians to Berlin. It was already predetermined by the Allies that Russia would take Berlin because the suffering they endured at the begging of the war. Heck, it is a fact the US Gen Patton (he bitterly complained to Gen Ike about this) said I can get the 3rd Army to Berlin before the Russians. But, politics prevented that. Did he tell the kids about Russia’s loss in Afganhistan during the 80s? NO. This is not a smart person but definitely manipulative.
This so-called teacher is a leftist, commie who wants to brainwash your students with his own interpretation of history. That is so unsophisticated. Wow, this Salicdo actually thinks he’s smart by trying to insult and fool young people. That’s a true leftist – go after the young, confuse them and then take control. He’ll be released from his job and then he’ll sue the school district for wrongful termination. What a shame, what a terrible shame. Parents wake-up! This is how leftist work, infiltration.

Why is he such basher of the USA?! No country is without it’s skeltons but the USA gives everyone who has drive and the wherewithal to bevome whatever they want to be in life. Always remember freedom is never free. Thank you to all US Veteans for their service.
