Long Leaves Bassett

By Tim Peterson

(La Puente) – Chris Long has stepped down as the head football coach at Bassett after two years sources confirmed Friday.

Long, who previously had a one-year stint at Arcadia as head coach, had an overall record of 3-17 after taking over for Hector Spathias after the 2015 campaign. Long also served as the AD at the school.

The search for a head coach will begin immediately. An original list of 40 applicants has been whittled down to 14 interviews.

I have some friends in the department, and at the DA’s office. I’ll dig around. If Bassett is doing what’s being claimed here expect heads to roll!

It sounds like someone definitely should be prosecuted. The authorities should go after anyone involved who is living large with no legitimate explanation for such a lifestyle, as well as those who were directly responsible for the money. I hope the residents of Bassett Unified succeed in setting things straight.

Yes, around 10 years ago there were arrest made. Money was missing and the people involved paid restitution of $17,000 and did no time. They took well over $70,000. But now they took it to a new level. Millions are missing with no answers.

If any of you can document a pattern of financial malfeasance at Bassett High and/or the school district, you ought to contact the L.A. County Office of Education and the district attorney’s Public Integrity Unit.
The California Department of Education could be interested as well; the authorities there can take over a school district where there’s gross mismanagement and/or extremely poor academic performance.
If the swap meet is being run by a private group, such as a booster club or educational foundation, that organization can be reported to the Sheriff’s Department or the District Attorney if there’s evidence of wrongdoing.
The residents of the Bassett Unified School District do have recourse if there are corrupt practices going on.

The administration wanted to go in a different direction. And the real reason, Spat called the administration out on them taking money out of the football account in order to get ASB out of the red. He put up a stink about how the administration miss appropriated the funds.

Chris Long is a good coach. That was a nightmare from the get-go. The site administration and then the district are a mess. They always have been. That school has been good in the past, and when they have support the kids stay and the parents support. It is about time that parents take back control of their districts! Get rid of the incompetent people in charge. You can do it. It is hurting your kids!

The problem was he was a late hire. Spathais got fired a lot of kids quit and didn’t go out for football. There sophomore all league RB transferred to Garfield where he was just a back up for two years. First year Long lacked coaches. Spathais Urias and Williams turned athlete’s into football players. District figured Spathais built a good program and Long would just take over. Didn’t work that way kids liked Spathais and staff that they just quit. Spathais put a lot of his own money into program.

@ Oly: If the situation is really that bad in Bassett Unified, the district could fall into state receivership. Any time that happens, it speaks volumes about the poor quality of the district administration and the school board.

Coach Long was a good coach. The district refused to pay him, so he told the district to find another coach. So much money goes missing in that district it’s criminal. The district wants to pass another $30 million bond, because the last $30 million bond went missing. I would be surprised if Bassett is around in 5 years. There are so many things wrong with that district it’s comical.

@ BHS parent: Bassett’s assistant principal for business and activities, or, possibly, a superior at the district office, could end up in charge of that hire. Good luck.

They don’t have a football coach, they don’t have a principal. Who is hiring the coach. I hope the person applying for the job knows what he is getting into. They need more than just a football coach. It take a special person to win ball games at Bassett.
