The Peterson Principle: 8/13/2018

    San Dimas O-Line: TE-Nick Sloan, Tackles- John Egan, Fadi Zaki, Guards- Chris Diaz, Fred Salazar, C- Nico Guerra

By Tim Peterson

The high school football season kicks off Thursday night. Don’t forget your peanuts, popcorn and…sunscreen. That’s right, sunscreen. With opening night moved up two weeks temperatures will be in the nineties when the ball is teed up.

It’s one thing to run around in near triple digit heat in shirts and shorts but in full helmet and pads? Is it really that important to get all of those State bowl games in by the first week in December? What’s next? A fourth of July picnic in Zero Week? I was fine with Labor Day weekend marking the season opening kick off. Why is it necessary get underway in mid August? Anybody know the real answer? Sorry. Those State Bowls just don’t do it for me.

I guess it could be worse. After all, it is football.

**

We know San Dimas will run for over 4000 yards. They always do. So instead of waiting until October to get the hogs up front some love, let’s get it out of the way now. Here’s the Saints offensive line. TE- Nick Sloan, Tackles- John Egan and Fadi Zaki, Guards- Chris Diaz and Fred Salazar, C- Nico Guerra.

The Saints are off Zero Week and will travel to Long Beach to face Wilson on August 24. They open Valle Vista League September 28th at Baldwin Park.

Speaking of Baldwin Park, they have another new coach. No Josh Knight did not get dismissed during passing leagues, but he did get promoted to Athletic Director. The new HC will be named this week. Before the BP faithful freak out please know that he’s familiar with the program and has been on staff  all summer. Until he is announced by the board I’m not at liberty to reveal his name but the transition will be a smooth one.

The Braves game against El Monte Friday night might not be so smooth however. The Lions, in Jesse Ceniceros’ double wing offense, have been running wild all summer. Last Friday night they blitzed Ganesha for nine touchdowns in 25 plays. Ben Owsley, a transfer from Paramount, looks like the real deal. After Baldwin Park, the Lions get Rio Hondo League opponents South Pasadena and San Marino at home.

Can they challenge Arroyo? “I told you they were going to be good,” said a local coach.

**

South Pasadena and San Marino will contend in the Rio Hondo but the big fish is still Monrovia. The Wildcats have not only brought in new head coach Chris Williams but they got the band back together as well for the rest of the staff. Former Wildcat stars Mason Bryant, George Frazier, Anthony Craft, Matt Norman and Ellis McCarthy are back in M-Town to coach the players up. Monrovia never fell off the face of the earth. But 4-7 records and first round playoff exits just don’t cut it at Monrovia.

“We need to get it back to where it was,” Craft said referring the CIF championship teams that he and his friends were part of.

Can Monrovia win a title in Williams first year? Time will tell but an offense with Maury Rams IV as the focal point isn’t a bad place to start. A road win over Burbank in Zero Week  on the road would be huge for the Cats.

**

I really like Arcadia in the Pacific. Seeing them win the SGV Shootout at Arroyo was impressive and the Apaches have talent all over the field. But I’m still in a place I have to see it to believe it. Beating Crescenta Valley and Burbank is no easy task no matter how much talent you have. The Apaches opening game at home against La Salle will be a nice measuring stick.

Keep an eye on Burbank tight end Duncan Smith. He caught 11 touchdown passes last year as a junior.

Muir might miss the playoffs again and the Mustangs opener at Charter Oak could get ugly. Muir lost to Arcadia, CV and Burbank last year and those three are just as good, if not better in 2018. Tough sledding for the Stangs.

**

We have two great local matchups Friday night with Bonita at Arroyo and Los Altos at Covina. For the Bearcats it will be the debut of head coach Steve Bogan. J.P. Andrade is back at quarterback and that along with Bogan should put Bonita right back in the hunt. I’m thinking we won’t be seeing a 3-7 season again.

Arroyo still has Ernesto Camacho. Does anybody else forget he was only a sophomore when he led the Knights to the CIF title in 2016?

Los Altos and Travis Brown will be looking to upend the Colts at District Field. A win over Covina in his first game as coach would be big for Brown but another Brown, Joe, and Nin Burns II will be standing in his way. Also the Conquerors need to find a way to stop Erik Cuellar who rushed for 2,302 yards and 20 touchdowns last year.

**

For everybody that keeps demanding the truth on the Schurr transfers, here you go. Of the nine total, six are “under review” and the other three are “pending former school’s response.” How did I dig out this information? How did I unearth this game changing bombshell? By logging on to the CIF website. It’s right there for all the world to see.

Oh and this will really sting. The three water polo guys got approved. And that’s the truth.

That’s my principle.

    I do agree with the slaves ending up in a great deal of the Caribbean nations. But why are we labeled African American. Why aren’t people called African Dominican for instance. Why aren’t whites called European American. I’m not going to go by it is all I’m saying. I find nothing wrong or incorrect either way whether someone wants to be known as African American or Black.

    MHS people,

    Please don’t buy into these comments about harassment. I’ve known Coach Gonzalez for over 30 years and never once have I ever seen him show any disrespect or harass any kid. That’s just ridiculous. I have been involved with local football for over 20 years
    ( Grant Rea). He comes to our games and stays back and justs watches. Never recruited kids. Never lied to parents about playing time. Never been disrespectful to the program. The Schurr coaching staff has done the opposite. Always spreading rumors and stirring kids to Schurr. The kids should just play where they fall in boundaries. If Schurr gets some then great. Same for Montebello. But all these transfers coming to Schurr isn’t right. I’ve known many great Schurr players and they did it correctly. Most of them are still friends and they too are not happy with the Integrity of the school being tarnished by this new Staff. If winning by cheating is how you want it then great. But in the end the coaches reputations will be held accountable. I’ve made a few phone calls to the district office and have been told that these players will not be cleared. So don’t hold your breath on a great season. I really think if these rumors are true then Schurr should fire that coach ASAP. He’s the one that’s putting these kids hs career on the line. No if ands or buts about it.

    @WarnerRobbins,

    No. All black people hold heritage from Africa. The reason there are Blacks in Caribbean nations like Jamaica or Haiti (etc.) is because they are descendants of African slaves brought to those islands. The Native populations (i.e., Indian or indigenous) were largely killed off if not completely wiped out via genocide. So, no, blacks are not technically native to the places under discussion, they are African via history and biology.

    By the way, Monrovia will be very competitive this season with one of the best team diversity in the LA county. This is a good comeback year for the Cats who will feature a pretty stout defense as well as a very good offensive line. The backfield will consist of a slew of gifted RB;s led by Maury Rams and the QB AJ Carreon who was their Freshman QB. This is a much more mature and disciplined team than we have seen in the past few years.

    Maybe they should all take a page out of the St. John Bosco handbook (Sean McGrew 5-7 / 176 RB, CB) as small and quiet in nature as he was, he withstood all of the competition the school had to offer and to this day I believe he has been one of the best RB in the past 10 years to attend SBJ. That’s what make good teams Great.

    @ Observantcat, part of the problem among our own here in this city is that they have no respect for each other. I am all for diversity but I am also for trying to help my culture and my city as much as I can. Too many of these peeps on here are all about themselves with no regard about the overall picture. Not sure how to change that but it’s been part of the local culture for years. These cats play pop warner together and know each other for years. I myself have plenty of friends from both schools so I won’t take sides but the city of Montebello has always been about respect between one another. Maybe that’s part of the problem, some of these coaches are not home grown. Between these schools they should have enough kids to consistently win league and go far into the playoff. Sure would like to see these two school come together rather than drift apart. Starts at the top but there lies the problem. The whole Unified School district has been hit by so many controversies maybe that is where they need to begin.

    To Local in the know;
    Your comment earlier about Rats moving into the neighborhood to take over positions is the same take that Trump has on some of the neighbors hood your speaking of.
    Your quote (The kids who actually play there, live there, and want to stay and grind it out shouldn’t have to have rats move in and get their spots they have worked so hard to get simply b/c the coaches want to keep their vanity mirror)
    I sure hope you’re not talking about some of the African American athletes that are giving some of these teams a bit more diversity as well as a more competitive prospective for the sport itself. If a kid can hold his own then they will standout no matter who you recruit. Several schools have proven this theory to be true. Thats what makes High school football so great, players begin to find their rhythm and begin to compete on much higher levels when the competition is greater.

    It’s called change! Change in diversity is good. Our kids need to experience different cultures, because in the real world your going to have to learn how to work with people from different backgrounds and cultures. As El Monte continues to grow with modern housing developments, so will the diversity! And the correct term is African American not blacks. It’s 2018

    @MHS PARENT
    You obviously are making this up. I’m here at Montebello right now registering my daughter. I just asked a player who is the younger brother of my son’s friend who I am not afraid to name. Just want to be sensitive to people who say we should’t put kids names on the blogs. And he just told me that never has coach Pete ever talked to the team about the transfer to Schurr. Never has he brought his name up or ever said anything about Schurr. From what I’ve learned about the Montebello staff is that if you are hearing something please feel free to go and ask the coaches yourself. Coach Pete will always talk to a parent. He has 3 coaches that graduated from Schurr. Pretty sure he has enough class then to talk about Schurr? Maybe i’m wrong? Go ask and find out. If not your just a lazy person who doesn’t want to find the truth out. Especially with a son on the team why would you not confront the coach. Don’t think he would lie to you especially if your son says he said something different? Maybe even confront him with your son present? Find the Truth! At least this blog gave my something to do while we wait to register.

    @MHS Alumni & MHS Parent.
    lol. You two are funny. If you want to talk about Oiler Pride then please do. Montebello has won 4 of the last 5 league titles. They do not get a bunch of transfer as claimed. (if so please give names) When they have received players as transfers from Schurr it wasn’t because they were recruited. They were influenced by current players who enjoyed being coached and accountable. My son is one of them. I had a chance to meet and play for coach Pete and I will say he was honest upfront about my son having to do well academically. Most of his friends that transferred to Montebello from Schurr were academically ineligible. Most of them sat a year out of football which made them eligible if they got there grades up. My son being one of them. I will tell you this Coach Pete is hard but in a accountable way. He does not talk about other players or schools like you are all claiming. I only wish i would have sent my son to Montebello from the beginning. For what it’s worth just thought you all should know the truth. You guys are lying about the mistreatment or bullying about players. That is not his style and with only 1 player transferring to Schurr in the last few years speaks volumes that he does not lose players. This 1 player might have been influenced by playing on the Air team.

    El monte has recruited some brothas to run the rock this yr. That is why they will do better. Secondly, its a terrible league..and they simply have to be better. Arcadia will do the same b/c of all of their transfers from NOT IN ARCADIA, and so will schurr b/c of their transfers they recruited to go there…that were almost all starters at other schools, no matter what the division they were in. Get it?! Really do you get it?
    Pete may be bad in your opinion, but his rb still got influenced to go to schurr…and hasn’t moved. That is easily able to be found out. Utility bill from “new” residence and move in date on the lease, and go to “old” address and check on whos living there and you already know that kid was practicing at schurr well before anything like a move occurred…oh no move I mean. ( called contact prior to enrollment) The 5 kids from SH, all at a private school who all of a sudden decided to go to the mecca of public school eduation at schurr, all left coincidentally at the same time to the same school and the buena park kids played for the guy recruiting them to go to schurr, 2 yrs ago. Not coincidental that , with all the better schools within ten miles of schurr, those schools didn’t get any of these kids that left? They all mysteriously on their own decided ” oh yeh I really want to go to that schurr school and be a starter b/c their players suck and I can start even though I was starting at my old school that I may have to end up staying at b/c I lied on my paperwork etc” Morons. I hope the schools that have to wait on the responses don’t get them. Hey CIF, win with honor!!!! Remember that mantra?
    The three water kids people also had to sit out!! Not cleared by VALID residency change. The schurr trans ies all had VCoR before they went under review and pending. The football kids, 9 of them, is really suspicious and by the coaches at the respective schools these kids are leaving have enough info, if CIF , is actually going to practice what they preach, and ban them. The schurr admin should really look into their coaches actions and either set an example on them or simply say this smells like bs and do the right thing and deny the transfers. The kids who actually play there, live there, and want to stay and grind it out shouldn’t have to have rats move in and get their spots they have worked so hard to get simply b/c the coches want to keep their vanity mirror. I can tell you as a person close to the schurr community, there are a lot of people at the school who want cif to do the right thing. They feel like their coach is hanging the real schurr kids out to dry .

    Bro, I don’t think your cynacism will be received well, however investigative reporting would. IDK maybe you can reach out to the coach or your ole buddy Mr. Olivas and find out what’s what and who’s who. You know maybe ask some of those inside sources reporters have. The reason we ask brother is because we care and appreciate everything you do for the little guys. You are in my opinion the best source of info for the mid valley. Take it as a compliment because it is!
