(Baldwin Park) The visiting El Monte Lions had little trouble defeating the host Baldwin Park Braves, as the Lions posted a 61-30 victory Friday evening, at
Ted Gorrell Memorial Stadium.
The Lions, 1-0, ran the fabled “Double-Wing” offense to near perfection, amassing 502 yards of total offense, and scoring nine touchdowns. I’m sure that Glenn “Pop” Warner would have smiled with approval. (If this name does not sound familiar, please enroll in a Football 101 course at your nearest remedial football facility.)
The star of the evening for the Lions was Junior Running Back Davon Booth. Booth carried the ball 12 times for 310 yards, reaching the end zone on five occasions. Booth scored on runs of 29, 35, 61, 65, and 66 yards. Additionally, Booth converted two 2 point conversion attempts. Also adding to the El Monte scoring barrage were Senior running backs Ben Owsley and Abel Ochoa Jauregui, who each added a pair of touchdown runs. Owsley also converted on a 2 point PAT attempt.
The Lions also had a few shining moments on defense as well.
Joel Plascencia and Junior Corner Abel Cueva each intercepted a pass from Baldwin Park quarterback Danny Vasquez. The Lions also recovered two BP fumbles.
Baldwin Park showed signs of promise in this early season contest. Vasquez completed 12 of 23 pass attempts for 157 yards, while passing for two touchdowns. Vasquez found his favorite target, WR George Quinones, for scoring completions of 32 and 37 yards. Vasquez also ran for a TD, scoring on a 5 yard blast. Also scoring a rushing touchdown was David Covamibias, who found pay dirt on a 36 yard run. The remainder of the Brave scoring was the result of three successful 2 Point PAT attempts. In each case, Vasquez connected with a different target for the successful conversion.
Week two will find El Monte traveling to South Pasadena to take on the Tigers.
Baldwin Park will host the Buena Park Coyotes. Both contests are scheduled for 8/24/18. Kickoff time for both games is 7:00PM.

Im sure Cuevas is more than happy to be the 3rd back this year as long as the other guys keep carrying them to victory.
If. Cuevas was a dude they wouldn’t have needed to go and recruit outside the area. The new kids are clearly better than him. Sucks for him but what can you do? As long as those coaches are there they will continue to recruit kids. If they have success the kids will roll in.
@lions roar, the knights sound mighty concerned to me. I love to see those guys quiver, keep doing what your doing lions. If Arroyo is shaking your doing something right…
Please don’t tell me @FridayKnights is Josh Knight??? Wonder if the school knows their “admin”, is bickering on a website. Kinda petty if you ask me for a HC let a lone the schools atlhetic director to be on here in a keyboard battle….
I don’t think he had one game with 25 carries last year. He got 5 carries averaging over 10 yards a pop. He also had a int on defense and ran it back only to get called on a phantom block in the back call. Watch our film and you’ll see how much of an impact Cuevas had. Plus Lions has under 40 plays 12, 10, 5, 4 on carries.
Anyways good luck to you coach! Hope all goes well for you. Goodnight
@ground and loud
Year round speed and strength lol what a cool concept. Never heard of that before. But, what in the name of Zeus’s fart first that tell me about why Abel went from 25 carries to 5 carries? Ohhh you mean he got worse in your “year round training” clowns are real folks!
Just stop with your nonsense already! Cuevas still our TWO WAY starter. It’s called a year round weight and speed program. You should try it. The best teams been doing it for a while now.
Let’s see………… Abel Cuevas was EMs leading rusher last season as a sophomore. He lost his starting rb job he only had 5 carries vs BP. There’s one.
Awipewonder: apparently you know absolutely nothing about the TRANSFERS RULES OF THE California Interscholastic federation , It stands for CIF very easy you could Google it : so here it is Transfer Eligibility

Oh so Devin Booth lives in El Monte right? Ben Owsley lives in EM yea right chump. I don’t care what you do just don’t like you didn’t do it. you needed help and you went out on the free agent wire.
get used to this every year, every season EM will get some RB from anywhere else.
@FridayKnights lmao, pot calling the kettle black don’t you think?? El Monte got 2 Transfers in, while BP has 9 according to C.I.F. With 7 of them being eligible right away to play… don’t be upset that our transfers don’t suck like yours do Ahahaha
@Lions Roar
I agree with you. Who came in? Don’t care. Who lost their spot? Don’t care. We will show up at EM in October and hopefully give you a good game.
Who came in? Who lost their spot? Look at the roster all EM starters from last year that returned are starters again. So worry about your team and any transfers you might have, hopefully in a few weeks we have a good showdown for the MVL title. EM staff trying to get kids out not worrying about these other schools till we play them.
All the new faces? Stop crying and get in the weight room. 9 returners on offense and 9 on D, who have been working their tails off all off season! If you don’t like it, play defense.
Everyone talking about Schurr how about ElMonte? All the new faces they have! It’s a shame kids stay loyal only for the coach to get new kids, Class act Coach C.
I said it earlier, BP coaching staff is a bunch of Junior All American guys. That show last night was pathetic by The Braves. No HC, fridayknights was there but not sure what he’s doing. Long season ahead for BP, just a bad quality of football, no passion for the Game and it seemed as if those kids have bad attitudes and no respect for their coaches!
You know Ligma?
Nobody need to complain all they have to do is play football. And you are wrong about the transfers
El Monte has this transfer thing down. Instead of recruiting a whole 7 on 7 team and try to please all those kids and parents… they recruited 2 backs and one lineman all three are starting and all three will have good seasons.
Wonder how long it’s gonna take the rest of the MVL to start complaining about the two transfers to EM
Well who looked like they were running the team on Friday.
They ran into a really good El Monte squad. Relax everything will be alright.
Coach Ligma, I think
What a joke of a game for Baldwin Park, that coaching staff has no clue what is going on. Kids looked unmotivated and not a clue what was going on. Maybe the HC from last year saw the writing on the wall and got out in time. Knight was at the game, so who’s the Head Coach? Leave it to BP to screw things up again…
Who is the new head coach for Baldwin Park
From T. Peterson: They haven’t officially told us yet.
Who is the new head coach for Baldwin Park.
Did Midvalley sports send sports writer ? Crappy article what happened during the game ………!
From T. Peterson: You have trouble reading? It’s right there! Huh??
