@Anonymous So by your logic we have to wait 7 or 8 more years to be relevant again? Sounds like a pile of excuses to me. Ive been at every game this season were not getting outplayed were getting outcoached. the talent of the teams weve played is right on par with our athletes. these were games we were winning last year. ill buy the fact that were young but i could argue that this team should be better simply because of balance. last year a couple guys really carried the team. this team has more guys that have the ability to contribute. i point out beltran who is the best athlete on the team but gets no love on offense, why? or the offensive line that should’ve been the strength of the team is a liability right now, why? because were not coaching them up. this team this year can absolutely win league but we wont because of a lack of coaching. people like you can make all the excuses they want but that’s all they are is excuses. So by your logic this staff can only coach when we a get another stud RB? or when the great class comes in 7 years from now? if that’s the justification than you suck! because these seniors want to win now they absolutely want to continue the ride of success here at the swamp but I believe the coaches don’t believe they can win at least that’s what they’re telling everyone to prolong getting exposed.

I always read these blogs but have never posted anything, however could resist this time. I think its so funny how all these ex athlete parents who come on here talking all this smacks cause of how these teams are doing right now, but its pre season or non league so chill out. like the saying goes it isn’t how you start its how you finish. I bet most of the teams doing good right now wont even make it to playoffs, either cause of injuries, bad luck, bad grades etc. etc… stop trying to live your dreams again…lol

Wow FK you don’t get it. The number 1 reason a team wins is not coaching. Making that call on Offense or Defense counts, but not as much as you think. How many times has Arroyo played teams that were really close to or equal to their players abilities this year? Absolutely none. They were better than all of them on paper. Yes even Bonita! They were ranked higher and they are in a higher division. So what was that score? Oh I get it, that 1st year coaching staff that does not know the boys just out coached Jim and Company. You know the one that has 4 varsity head coaches on it. LMAO! Its elementary Watson, Bonita’s players, are just better athletic football players! If CIF does what they are suppose to too each team the teams will be in the division 1 or 2 spot it deserves to be in within 6 years. Now it will be up to the Schools Administration, AD’s and leagues to balance it all out. But, as I have said in the past, EMUHSD does not want fairness.

@ El Monte Fan: Why the resentment? Yes, you are likely to be right about an El Monte vs. Alhambra matchup, if the game were to be played right now. So then, we’d be 3-1, which is still a pretty good record.
I believe it’s rather extreme to refer to all of Alhambra’s nonleague opponents as “trash.” I also think that our nonleague schedule compares favorably to those of many other Division 13 schools.
In my opinion, the Rowland Raiders would be considered a decent team if they played in a league such as the Montview or the Miramonte. They’d certainly have a shot at third place in the Mission Valley League.
The vast majority of lower-division teams would have difficulty if they were placed in the Valle Vista League, which includes perennial contenders Northview, San Dimas, and Covina. Rowland has to face those schools every year.
Alhambra played L.A. Wilson last Friday, and I can tell you first-hand that the Mules have some size and talent. They are also a very physical team. I’m willing to guess that they’re among the better teams in Division II of the L.A. City Section; I wouldn’t be surprised if they made a playoff run.
Good luck to your Lions; perhaps we can go head-to-head with you reasonably soon.

Was really hoping for a battle of the undefeated when La Serna (CA rank 110) and Warren (CAr 220) met up…now Warren may be looking at a possible 2nd consecutive loss this week when they face Mayfair (CAr rank 135), while the Lancers face Montebello (CAr 597), most likely a win. I sure hope not, as a 4-0 v 3-1 matchup would be most intriguing.

St. Paul (CAr 78) will be tested as they take on Paraclete (CAr 131). Not sure how LA (CAr 261) was able to take them into OT a couple of weeks ago…

Haha what did I tell both of you guys this summer? Everything I said would happen has happened. You know SEM looks like? They look like the team that took the field in Gallardos first season the team that won 2 games. They also only ran 6 total plays! and just in case guys needed reminding that was the year before Mike Mooney joined the staff. So, if they looked terrible before his arrival and they look terrible after his departure ummmm do the math! Mike Mooney was the difference! Period! Having watched two complete SEM games I can already see easy to scout insanely predictable very sloppy and that Offensive line is in shambles after losing MM. Defensively they’re exactly the same defense except without the two all league safeties from last year and without a pair of dominant edge rushers other than that it’s the same defense lmfao! Hey, Thompson, don’t be so sure SEM Beats Mt View or Gabrielino the way they’re playing I’m not so sure. It was just a few months ago you stamp 300-400 yards a game on the ground for the Eagles at a minimum now they’re getting a cool 96 yards this from team. Btw it’s a wing t team! Yes wing t an offense that’s supposed to run for high numbers. Here’s the problem with Gallardo and that SEM staff you can boil it down to one word… EGO! One man wanting all the credit and was too blinded by ambition to see he was getting all the credit. SEM. Had a good thing going but ruined it and in doing so cheated those kids especially the Sr class. Typical SEM move! Meanwhile Arroyo says thank you with a tip of our caps! Don’t mind us we’ll just keep putting up 50 on teams year in and year out! See Gallardo, Arroyo has great coaches but in the end only ONE really gets all the kudos! The head coach. And you know what he does in turn? Take a guess smarty pants………. he says thanks guys and takes them all to dinner! And does it again the next year!

Hey EM kitties, you guys recover from that Hobbie beat down? Lol 76! Unbelievable. We might put up 90! No joke

    Rosemead looks like all hype
Gabrielino is all hype and weak schedule.

@ Matador: It appears that the San Gabriel Matadors are at least somewhat improved from last year, based on what I’ve read about them in recent weeks.
But, I haven’t seen them play yet because I’m too busy doing stats for Alhambra.
The next time I’ll get to see San Gabriel play will be on Oct. 12, when the Matadors visit Moor Field on Alhambra’s homecoming night.
A lot can happen between now and then, and I’m not the type to make predictions, anyway. However, it would be nice if both teams have a legitimate shot at a playoff spot.

@CD: It would seem to be a fixable situation to see who deserves to be in the playoffs in the crowded lower divisions. Strength of schedule and head to head results in non league games seems a good start. Make division 12 teams play other division 12 teams in non league season and rate those outcomes as a reason to qualify. It does not seem fair to punish a lower division team for playing in a tough league.

@ Correct Divisions: It’s very meaningful to us at Alhambra. The Moors are working to become the best Division 13 team possible.
Perhaps you haven’t noticed that we’re 4-0; the last time we had such a good start was in 2011, when Lou Torres was our head coach. And, Alhambra did make the playoffs as recently as 2016.
So far, we’ve done it with a strong defense, and with special teams that have been solid most of the time.
However, our offense regressed against L.A. Wilson; we made way too many mistakes, including turnovers and penalties. We were fortunate to get the win; the defense had to bail us out at the end.
Of course, the games that will matter the most for us are the five which are coming up in the Almont League. We’ve already equaled our win total for all of last season, but our performance in league play will determine whether we are a substantially improved team.

I believe that the high school leagues covering the San Gabriel Valley and nearby areas should have been reorganized a long time ago.
In my opinion, it hasn’t happened yet because it’s not a priority for the CIF Southern Section. Our regulatory body for high school sports seems to be preoccupied with prolonging the football season and raking in money from playoff and bowl games.

I don’t know if that means anything to Alhambra. It doesn’t matter what division you are in if you don’t make the playoffs, and Alhambra has been a pretty consistent 2-3, 4th place team. Glendale doesn’t get any benefit from being in Division 13 as opposed to the old SE Division. It just means that getting destroyed in the Pacific League leaves them out of a lower division of the playoffs.

Pioneer, on the other hand, is in a better place with the creation of the new 605 league for mediocre teams.

That’s what should happen. Appropriate divisions are not nearly as important as well-balanced leagues. Unfortunately, that is a lot harder to pull off.

Maybe putting Alhambra and Pioneer in divisions where they could compete prompted more boys to come out and play football. Both teams are fired up and doing surprising well. Maybe CIF re-aligning is proving to bring back football to some schools.

Hey man, I love the passion and I feel your frustration especially on a night where all time Eagle greats Tommy Cogburn,Lee Aguirre and Manuel Rosales we’re inducted into the Hall of fame. On a night like last night where lets be honest we sucked! it makes you appreciate the special talents we’ve had here at the swamp. Ok back to the game, 4-5 plays is all we call and it seemed like Bellflower knew exactly what plays were coming. Last year we spanked Bellflower this year they returned the favor. Next three games should be a time to fix and experiment a little as it should be 3 easy wins but if we stick with the 4-5 plays were gonna finish a disastrous 4-6 and miss the playoffs! Defense is playing pretty good But the offense needs to open up. I think “the other coach” as you put it would’ve had us 3-1 right now. One wipe is right I think it’s time for Frank to address the offense now. This shotgun wing t offense should be put on ice already if you’re not gonna throw why are we in gun? And also I agree why isn’t Beltran a running back ? At least in the rotation. Last thing… how do you have a Hall of Fame but Coach Thompson isn’t the first man in? One of my favorite sayings he had, You want a fight? You got one! you guys member that one lol peace out.

And down go the Cubs….. The Cathedral Football program is on the rise. They have a great staff in place on O and D. This is not the same program from a year ago. The game was a pure blowout after the 1st half. Loyola came in overlooking Cathedral. The Cubs were out coached and out played by the Phantoms. No matter how you slice it, CHS owns the Downtown Crown. It truly was a disappointing game to watch. Expected far more from the Cubs’ O. The Cubs supposedly have a highly publicized and touted QB and he was a zero factor nor, the wolfiepack defence. Don’t fall asleep on CHS.

How long Is Gallardo gonna sit back and watch this offense stink up the stadiums? This season is gonna go up in flames if this guy doesn’t put a halt to this asap. 3 and out after 3 and out. heres the offense folks, Rocket sweep, Iso play, a counter and a play action pass that almost never works because the dufus only throws it on third and 20! I hear this guy scream and holler “step it up” “toughen up” and all sorts of other things I make out. but dude, how about look in the mirror? How about you “step it up” I mean come on now does the wing t really only have 4 plays? is that how far you got in the how to coach football for dummies book? 4 plays! yea that’s the kids fault too I bet! probably all they can handle right coach, I mean hell you guys have only been here for 4 years now. Another obvious thing here, Gaspar Beltran is your best player! how about instead of parading him at receiver and never throw him the football, you hand the ball off to him and maybe he can make some plays for us…ya think!!! Im sorry but this new OC guy is a terrible play caller . Saw Sal Tovar on the sidelines tonight, as good as he was he probably couldn’t have much success with this bozo calling plays. bottom line Frank Gallardo I know you read this blog, is this what we have to look forward too 4 plays and some feminine screams from this Richard fellow? this is what you brought in to replace “the other coach” eh! are you really gonna sit back and let this thing implode? regardless of what happens against Marshall Mt. View and Gab those guys will just make us look decent. the three that matter follow those three. So frustrating to watch. Get Beltran the ball bozo!!! I want “the other coach” back!!!! 100 yards of offense tonight would shock me! Our Eagles looked deflated tonight. Frank you just might lose these boys if you don’t “step it up”

So I had a chance to finally go catch a game and opted for the LS-Colony game since they are both ranked in the division. I was not disappointed (luckily, I work in that area and didn’t have to fight the 60 frwy traffic). What an exciting game to watch. Neither team seemed to be out of this game. While there were times you thought the momentum would change and one team might runaway with it…..the other would come right back.
My personal thoughts: the composure maintained by the LS team was impressive. They seem to be outsized and out-powered by Colony but they never conceded. They seemed to make big plays when needed. The LS qb is pretty impressive. The RBs are nothing special but they are scrappy and get the job done. Defensively, the LBs made some big hits when needed….42, 43 & 44 are nasty!!! This LS team reminded me of something our old coach used to tell us, “these guys carry a hardhat and steel lunch pail to work”.
As a local guy from the area, it’ll be interesting to see how things play out in post season play. If both teams get into the playoffs, I hope CIF places St. Paul & LS on opposite ends of the Div 5 bracket. It’ll make for a nice backyard brawl.
