Quick question. Been away for awhile and are just getting caught back up as far as CIF playoffs are concerned. Since now in leagues, there’s teams that are in different divisions but in the same league. Do they still make playoff appearances based on league title and 2nd place league?? Is it CIF division rankings or what?
From T. Peterson: It’s still based on how you finish in league. In some leagues only the first and second place teams will get in.
Bank on it – Arcadia beat you, get over it!!
RealApache – I dont think I have ever seen a post from you where you werent complaining.
@ No Moor: Man, you’re too much. The officiating was relatively good in four of our six games so far this season; it was really subpar in only the L.A. Wilson and Schurr games.
I know Schurr has a beef with the officials, since the Spartans got called for 140 yards in penalties last Friday. That crew inserted itself into the game way too much in general, and they weren’t always clear on what they were doing, either.
And, if Alhambra gets its butt kicked, or loses by one point fair and square, I’ll be honest enough to say so.
Don’t know,but heard he is a guru!
@With Lenses
The OC is Dustin Diplock.
As we look forward to Friday’s AHS-Montebello game, I’d like to remind everyone that the officials are probably going to be horrible, and that players who have followed the rules in transferring to either team are entitled to be there. Neither issue should be the basis for Saturday morning excuse-making.
Come on, they’re not that bad. Without the recruits Arcadia would be competing for 5th with HS. Though maybe you have a point – they did lose to Glendale and finish 7th in Policky’s first or second year. Still, I think that was an aberration
@ Anonymous fact is that without your hired guns Arcadia would be playing for 6th or 7th place in the Pacific. The whole staff and administration are all in on this little charade of illegal players and you guys pound your chest as if you’ve really accomplished anything. Smdh
@ No Moor: You’re hilarious; you really have a flair for hyperbole. There was no getting bent out of shape on my part, except about the officiating, which affected both teams. I learned a long time ago not to be unrealistic about things.
It was a tough loss for Alhambra, but tough losses happen, and we’ve had our fair share of them. If you read the game story on this website, that was my reporting. I stick to the facts as close as humanly possible and I try my best to tell it like it is.
By the way, I’ve previously said on this blog that Alhambra was winning primarily on the strength of its defense and special teams, and that the offense was a work in progress. (That has been particularly true about our run game. We do pretty well passing the ball, with a good young quarterback and capable receivers.)
Lofty expectations? I’ve always taken the games one at a time, and our program has not become re-established enough yet for us to underestimate anyone.
Alhambra historically has had difficulty beating the Montebello district schools, and I certainly hope that a turnaround there starts soon.
Oh, and the pollsters? They’re the coaches; it just goes to show that they’re human, too. I was somewhat skeptical about that #1 ranking myself, but you must’ve missed my comment on that topic as well.
You don’t really know me, but take care, anyway.
@ Anon: I love Alhambra; it’s a nice school overall, and I like the community. I look forward to each new day there.
As for how many of your transfers played on Friday night, I don’t know; I just said that they became eligible last week. (Fair and square, I might add.) That’s an interesting question, though. I’ll look for them on the game video when I do our defensive stats.
I hope those guys do well the rest of the way.
To Annonymous. You and your Schurr Spartans are Chumps.
This is The last Hurrah for Arcadia. Word on The streets is The Coaching staff who recruits for Arcadia will not be back.
Way to show some class Maverick.
LS….I’m no cholo, but I probably know more subjective football than you do. But I’m not even gonna fall for your bait for banter. You’re commenting on pure emotion and I’m not impressed. Just like I’m not impressed with Cal’s non-league schedule. Whatever makes you think Cal Will be ER by 20. I’d sure like to hear some intelligent reasons as to why. Plus we have a bye week, which gives us 2 weeks to prepare for that match up. Plus it’ll be their homecoming game. So IF you ever played, you know kids get hyped for that and it’ll be a good game for ER to show their ready to be a team to look out for in league. I know the hype for La Serna is real. But…we’ll see. Yes ER one week at a time. I get all of that. But I’d say if they can beat Cal at home…Hell the Bills were able wax and beat the breaks off of the vikings so anything can happen.
Whose the La Mirada offensive coordinator ????
@Real Apache, it is a wonder you seem to know who the “local kids” are? Are they the kids you approve of playing or just the ones you’ve personally known since they were 3? AHS is a big place with many kids coming to Arcadia just for high school. This isn’t unique to any program at that school. Maybe they should also require anyone who attends to own a home in Arcadia as well. You’ve probably had a home there for a long long time before a 3 bedroom house was 1.2 million. You were born on 3rd base and act like you hit a triple. You don’t know anything and maybe you shouldn’t go if you don’t support the program.
@ Bank on It, you’re still mad Arcadia beat you badly on your own field aren’t you.
Peterson said it best when handicapping the AHS-Schurr game: the Moors’ preseason had more cupcakes than the bakery department at Vons. THAT’S the whole reason for the 5-0 start and the CIF #1 ranking: the wins came easy and none of the pollsters knew enough about the situation to vote differently. It’s unfortunate that Vrooman got bent out of shape coming down from the mountain of lofty expectations, but isn’t HE a guy who should have known that Alhambra hadn’t suddenly found the magic pill of greatness? Call me the bad guy for telling it like it is, but include Tim Peterson too…he didn’t buy the fantasy either.
@ My Two Cents: I’m not arguing that the late hit call swayed the outcome of the game one bit. The game hinged on Alhambra’s defense not stopping Schurr on 4th-and-12 with a minute left.
My main point was that the officiating was rather inept in general. And, in my opinion, the ineptitude of that crew was equal-opportunity in nature.
AHS will have to bounce back and play a good game against Montebello. We are far from done.
@ Early Morning: Great advice; we’ll see what happens this Friday night.
@Maverick
That LS guy is a chump – glad you’re able to echo what true La Serna fans are really all about.
@ Real Apache maybe if you did a better job recruiting from your band you wouldn’t have to outsource to fill positions and you could watch your local kids play all the time. But, as long as you feel good abut your *wins it shouldn’t matter.
@Ron, I know you want to justify that Alhambra should have won. It doesn’t matter to me, I have no dog in the fight. How quickly the referee blows his whistle is irrelevant. If the player is hit after he went out of bounds, which you clearly saw he was since you had stated here again and again than it is a dead ball foul. If he was tackled simultaneously as he went out of bounds, perhaps there shouldn’t have been a penalty at all. You can’t have a late hit which means after the play is dead and have it tag on as part of the play (if a live ball foul). Late hits are always dead ball fouls, regardless if the runner is in or out of bounds. You can’t have it both ways. If a Schurr player would have grabbed your punter’s face mask and twisted it as he was going out of bounds then it would be different.
@alhambra fans
@schurr fans
Focus on your next opponent. The game is over! Move forward to next week gentlemen….
It was one hell of a game, played by some tough young men.
@ Anon: Not classless, only factual.
Any team that has at least four (and possibly five) transfer players become eligible just in time for the start of league play cannot help but benefit. It’s all legitimate, though; those guys were cleared to play. The information is right there on the CIF website.
Some teams rely more heavily on transfers than others, and I believe that’s a fair topic for discussion. I’m not inherently opposed to all transfers; I simply ask everyone to follow the rules that apply at any given time. That shouldn’t be too much to ask for.
Also, you must have missed the compliments that I gave to the Spartans on their win in the league opener. Their quarterback, Nathaniel Palacios, wide receiver Jeremiah Hartfield, and running back Isaiah Contreras all came through with outstanding performances.
It all came down to the Spartans outplaying Alhambra the last two plays of their final drive. I give them credit for winning a big game.
You sounded like a chump just two weeks ago now you’re a super team with wins over Gabrielino and MV. Come on now. This isn’t your old El Monte Lions. You could wish and hope they are but it’s not going to happen.
@ My Two Cents: The hit happened a split-second after the Alhambra punter (Raul Cortez) went out-of-bounds. How is that a dead-ball foul? The officials didn’t even have time to whistle the ball dead.
If there has been a rule change on hits out-of-bounds right at the end of a play, please let me know. I’m willing to be educated. That has not been a dead-ball foul in the past.
By the way, as I stated earlier, the 15-yard penalty would’ve been more than sufficient to give Alhambra a first down.
If you were actually at the game, you would’ve witnessed an unsteady officiating crew which had to repeatedly confer, sometimes at length, in order to figure out what to do. That was the worst-run game I’ve seen this year.
@MVS
Post the score of the La Serna vs Cal game.
49-27 La Serna.
Facts? Lol
Saying that we had 5 transfers playing. Classless comment. Ron admit it your miserable at Alhambra
Who is this LS dude? You need to chill bro!
You don’t represent La Serna Football.
As a true LS fan for 15+ years (Yes before the Beltran and Palmer years) I can say we at La Serna don’t take any team lightly. Do you remember in 2014 when the Don’s beat us on their Home field?
Have some respect for ER’s program and show some pride in our own. La Serna Football is about Courage, Character and Commitment.
The sad thing is that Ron is the one that start these comments by saying Schurr had 5 transfers that were playing. Classless act
phantom fanfare; Great coach replaced good one few years ago and win state championship and a couple cif championships; better than ever; he resigns and they falter, but will do fine in league
Football Fan A=Yes coaching is a huge variable=I will only use 2 examples; El Rancho under vinnie Lopez; and much more exemplary a Coach named Welch; 4 CIF championships at Canyon (I think) of Canyon Country=he left for a while ; program became only good; came back won another championship; then goes to Santa Margarita and wins one
El Rancho; agree that 7 on 7 is not real football; yet good for learning passing game and defensive coverage; some get all excited about passing games/leagues in summer=I believe football is about blocking and tackling, which is absent in those games
@Ron Vrooman, come on man! Really? If you are going to criticize the officials, at least give an example that supports your criticism. You yourself said, “The late hit out-of-bounds on our punter…” If he was hit after he went out of bounds than a dead ball personal foul is the correct call. As soon as your punter ran out of bounds, the ball is dead. If he hasn’t reached the line of gain than Schurr would get the ball on the turnover on downs. Schurr would than be penalized the fifteen yards. If Schurr would have committed the personal foul, such as unnecessary roughness before the play is blown dead than it would be a live ball foul where the penalized yardage would be part of the play. It still isn’t an automatic first down, if after the fifteen yards penalty the ball is placed at or beyond the line of gain than Alhambra would be awarded a new series of downs.
If you and your friend anonymous think you guys can do better than the officials you are criticizing, I am sure the San Gabriel Valley unit of CFOA would love to have you join them. Here is the link, http://www.sgvfoa.com. I can’t wait to watch both of you guys referee those freshmen games next season.
To “@ Alhambra’s…..”:
You’re the one who’s getting strident here. I’ve always striven to keep my comments factual and reasonable; the only thing that got me a bit irritated today was No Moor’s condescending tone.
I offered facts and what I considered to be fair analysis about Friday night’s game, and I was pretty pleasant about it under the circumstances. Unfortunately, not everyone appreciates my candor, but that’s to be expected when we discuss topics that are a bit controversial.
You have the right to say pretty much what you want, and so do I. I certainly have not been discourteous to anyone.
You’re painting with a pretty wide brush when you say that I talk nonsense, like I’m just another fan who makes boastful and possibly ill-informed remarks. That’s just not my style. Please point out what I have been so far off-base about; I’d really like to know.
Have a pleasant weekend. Until next time…
The Eagles took care of business beating Gab and The ducks. Couple things to note Gasper Beltran has stepped up big time not sure what the coaches were thinking not using this kid before the last two games but I don’t care as long as they continue to use him. Also Mario Z at QB looks comfortable now he’s making reads and is dangerous with his legs. His potential is huge. At big reason for the success is the offensive line starting to play better they were horrible early on which was mind blowing because everyone thought they’d be the best in league hands down. We lost one of starters for reasons unknown but were playing better now the real season starts now. we got the Dames from Arroyo next then two weeks to prepare for rosemarys and the showdown with the kitties. If we win 2 of 3 were in. It’s hard to believe in the hype in EM when was the last time they Arroyo or SEM? They’ll falter they always do. New faces same results.
