(Hacienda Heights) – Jarod Lucas poured in 49 points to lead Los Altos to an 81-69 win over South Hills Friday night on the Conquerors home floor.

Lucas had 31 in the first half, including 17 in the second quarter as Los Altos led 44-35 at the break. The Conqs extended the lead to 13 at the end of three and never relinquished the advantage. South Hills cut the lead to eight in the fourth quarter but that was as close as the Huskies would get.

Lucas hit five three pointers and also went coast to coast and threw down a dunk that electrified the crowd in the third quarter. Lucas went 13 of 25 from the field including five of 10 from beyond the arc, and hit 18 of 20 from the free throw line. Lucas was coming off a 54 point performance Wednesday night against West Covina.

Lucas, a senior who is averaging 38 points per game, has moved up to number five on the Southern California High School boys basketball scoring list. He is already committed to Oregon State.

Although Lucas was the bulk of the offense he did receive some help along the way. Dion Porter scored 14 points and Christian Cavanias and Isaiah Barcelo each added eight.

The Huskies had three players in double figures with Ahmed leading the way with 14.

With the victory Los Altos improved to 14-5 overall and 4-0 in the Hacienda League. South Hills dropped to 10-10 and 1-3.

Having Jarod in the mix is unquestionably a blessing, but my thoughts wander to what will happen at L.A. when this kid has moved on (to Oregon State). I suspect things will revert to the level of play which typified the pre-Lucas era. That’s not a bad thing, but it will be a far cry from what the coach’s son brought to the show.
