(Monrovia) – La Canada knew going into today’s game that any loss would damage their chances of winning the Rio Hondo League title this season to San Marino.
The Lady Spartans (19-4) didn’t stumble at all as they shook off the loss on Friday to the Titans with a pivotal victory over Monrovia, 7-0.
Lauren O’Leary (14-2) pitched four strong innings and retired 12 of the 13 batters she faced and Lauren Cox came in to close out the game allowing one hit in three innings, while baffling hitters with her new found change-up.
It only took La Canada three innings to plate two runs as Megan Martin (one for three with three RBI’s) doubled home Kelsey Drange and Catherine Horner to give the Lady Spartans.
Lady Wildcats (11-9) pitcher Cori Williams (9-8) was able to get out of jams early in the game before Martin’s double. The first inning saw Williams load the bases up on walks only to have Selina Mohr line into an inning-ending double play.
The Lady Spartans managed to put the game on ice in the top of seventh when they sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs. Williams helped the rally by walking Anna Edwards, Drange and Horner (two for three with two doubles) to set the table for Martin again who grounded out to second, but allowed Edwards to score to make the score 4-0.
La Canada then pitch-hit for Mohr with Emily Valencia and she delivered with a single that scored both Drange and Horner. Valencia was moved over to second on a ground out and eventually would score on Jessica Ogden’s single to give the Lady Spartans a seven-run lead.
Cox would then shut down Monrovia in their home half of the seventh for the victory. Cox aided in the scoring with a home-run in the sixth.
