History Making Win for Arcadia

Garrett Tuck played a big part in Arcadia's perfect league run

By Corey Kwok

(Glendale)  – Aggressive base running, clutch hitting, and a couple passed balls paved the way for Arcadia’s 6-2 win over Crescenta Valley Friday night at Stengel Field at Glendale College.

The Apaches got a solid performance from KJ Edson and a determined defense as they became the first team in Pacific League history to finish undefeated at 14-0. Edson went the distance and fanned six while allowing six hits.

Jono Tom began with a walk and advanced on a blown pickoff before scoring as Garrett Tuck hit an RBI single to center for a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Erik Trask led off the second by lining a single to left. Falcons’ starter Troy Mulcahey retired the next two before Tom and Jonathan Larson drew walks to load the bases. Tuck hit one to shortstop but the throw to second was wild into right field allowing Trask and Larson to score for a 3-0 advantage.

Mulcahey was pulled and replaced by Elliot Surrey in the third inning after he fell behind 2-0 in the count on Apache leadoff batter Jonathan Wong. Wong (2 for 4) jumped on Surrey’s first pitch for a single to right, and Kyle Schneider followed two pitches later by pounding a double to center field.

Wong later scored on a passed ball, which advanced Schneider to third and after Kristian Noguchi drew a full count walk, pinch hitter Kyle Yeh hit a bloop infield RBI hit to pick up Schneider to put Arcadia up 5-0.

Crescenta Valley rallied for a deuce in the bottom of the third to narrow the cushion. Surrey singled up the middle and Joe Sedano was hit by a pitch before the two moved up on a wild pitch. Mulcahey picked up Surrey with an RBI groundout to shortstop before sprinting home as Kyle Pomeroy sizzled an RBI double to left center to cut the lead to 5-2.

Tom picked up an insurance run for Arcadia in the seventh by driving in Trask with a two out single to right. Tom went 2 for 3, scored two, and walked twice. Trask had two hits and also stole two bases.
