Lions Maul Panthers, 59-24

By Rich Whittington

(El Monte) El Monte continued their winning ways Friday evening, as the Lions completely dominated the visiting Rosemead Panthers, 59-24, in front of a sizable
Homecoming crowd at Lions Stadium.
El Monte was led by the scoring trio of RB Davon Booth, RB Abel Cueva, and QB Joseph Herrera. Booth led the way for the Lions, rushing for 223 yards on 20 carries,
while scoring touchdowns of 3, 6, and 60 yards.

Additionally, Booth converted three 2-point conversion attempts. Booth would also be on the receiving end of a 40 yard TD pass from Herrera. Cueva added three TD’s of his own… scoring on runs of 4, 6, and 38 yards.

Cueva also successfully converted two additional 2-Point PAT attempts. Last, but certainly not least, Herrera added a pair of TD’s of his own, scoring on a 1 yard TD
blast, as well throwing the scoring pass mentioned above.

The EM offense accounted for 486 total yards, the “Lion’s Share”, 446 yards, coming on the ground.

Rosemead was led by QB Ivan Ostry, who had a part in all of the points that were scored by the Panthers. Ostry rushed for 127 yards on 21 carries, including touchdowns of 6 and
12 yards. In addition, Ostry connected with David Padilla for a 39 yard aerial score. Ostry also converted 3 2-Point PAT attempts…running in two of the scores,

and passing to RB Jaydon Campbell for the third.

The EM defense also made their presence known by providing consistent pressure which inhibited Rosemead’s ability to find a comfortable rhythm. Standouts on defense included Marcos Montoya, who sacked QB Ostry for a 7 yard loss, JJ Reyes, who intercepted an errant Ostry pass, and Juan Torres, who knocked down a Rosemead pass attempt.

Next week, Rosemead travels to South El Monte to battle the Eagles. El Monte is also on the road, as the Lions travel to Arroyo to take on the Knights. Kickoff for both of these contests in s 7:00 p.m.

Contrary to popular belief, some of us Arroyo backers could care less about EM transfers. We just hope we can slow them down.

@Stop being naive you are so right but These people especially Arroyo people will never accept it, even when they know themselves they have had kids from other el monte schools go to Arroyo so stop being hypocrites. We get it your having a couple down years just take it and stop crying. I still cant believe week after weeks it’s the same complaint about 1 outer city and 2 inter city transfers. If I recall in past post some said Reyes wasn’t even that good and Montoya wasn’t going to play.

Stop being Naive, every school has transfers, some have more than others. Kids are kids, let them play football and stop looking for excuses. Arroyo has 30 Football kids in their program that should be going to EM, SM, and MV. I am around youth leagues all day, I know what goes on with constant recruiting. FYI, guess what? even the schools that have horrible records have transfers.

@Reality wake up your waisting your breath my friends, all these haters will never understand and will always downplay El Montes success this year. No matter what they say all of these boys are born and raised in El Monte except 1 (Devon). So what if Reyes was supposed to be at Mtniew or Montoya at SEM, we are talking about 3 players. Camacho lived down Maxson closer to El Monte or Mtnview but went to Arroyo, you didnt hear people talk about how shameful Arroyo should be. No you didnt. Arroyo is having a down year and that’s it’s, its not the end of the world. There’s always next year.

That is so incredibly funny to call this a team. Don’t wish for it just recruit right Coach haha Hahahaha. Shame on the administration to allow all this. Most of these kids don’t belong and that’s sad for the EM players. Arroyo might drop the hammer on this team but then again Arroyo is not good either now that they haven’t be able to recruit kids right Jimmy. Hahahahahaha

Hey the kids that kicked your kid’s DELETED on Friday night, are the same kids from two years ago. They were just sophomores. It’s called a weight room and off season training. In 3 years El Monte has had 3 transfers. Two of them El Monte boys, born and raised in the city. Get off the transfer excuse already. If your coach had something to offer, maybe Rosemead would get a transfer? Stop crying and work! Your making your children look bad. And props to your #77 and #21 Booth only had 220 yards while Cueva had 140. The team had over 400 total yards rushing! So yeah they did REAL well! LOL what a joke!

Is C and his staff doing great things? Yes! Are they where they are because of transfers? Yes! I would just have so much more respect for a coach than starts from the ground up. “Recruit” the kids that belong to EM and stop them from going elsewhere. If the city of EM kept all their athletes it would be a much more competitive league but that’s not for parents kids to decide. It’s for coaches to create a worthy product. A few years ago Arroyo, El Monte, Rosemead and SEM were all respectable. They had Singiser, Sanchez, Paramo and Aguilar. Say what you will about them but they did good things and had success and not one MVL team would turn anyone of those guys down now, except maybe Arroyo. Wouldn’t the MVL be so much more fun if kids went to the school where they belonged? Arroyo definitely wouldn’t run the table year in and year out and Mt View would be a playoff team now and then. There would be much more parity. It would be a lot of fun to watch. Unfortunately, it’ll never happen.

Much respect to El Monte lions, no matter what anyone on here saying about transfers, this transfers that you still need to show up, and execute and you guys do. I remember last year you guys where bigger and better on the Oline but weak at corner/safety position. Well from what I saw this past friday problem solved, that # 2 kid can play defense now Booth dont have to do it all on defense himself. Good luck next week and the rest of the way make the city of El Monte proud.

Who reported this game, not one mention off #77 or #21 of Rosemead defense, #77 clobbered everyman placed in front or around him, #21 handled both booth and cuevas while being triple teamed the whole game, that young man handed booth his 1st fumble and the EMHS student body has been passing around that hit video clip of #21 taxing booth, guess he’s not all that, I can’t find any film on this #21player from Rosemead Adrian Martinez, anybody know who he is ?? Thanks.

Rosemead needs more than 4 coaches if they want to even have a chance with anyone.

That school ought to be ashamed of itself. These wins are meaningless and will always be marred by the fact that they had to have transfers to accomplish them. El Monte got stomped 3 years ago, before they had to air lift points in from South El Monte and Las Vegas.
