Spathias Returns as Head Coach at Bassett

(La Puente) – Hector Spathais has returned as the head football coach at Bassett he confirmed Thursday.

This is the second stint for Spathias as head coach at Bassett. He last coached there in 2015.

“We have all new administrators from the district to the high school. They have assured me that they will support athletics and football,” Spathias said. “So yes, my staff and I will take over the football program and if the district gives us the okay to play we will have our first scrimmage March 12 against Covina.”

Spathias led Bassett to the CIF playoffs three times during his first run there, including a 6-5 overall record and a playoff berth against San Dimas in 2015, his final year.

Spathias then spent one year at Montebello as an offensive line coach, one year as the head coach at Los Altos where he went 7-3 before taking over as head coach at Workman for two years. The Lobos went to the playoffs both years with a first place and a second place finish.

Spathias, as the Athletic Director at Bassett, was originally leading the way to find a replacement for Martin Soto who stepped down in November, before deciding to take the position himself.

“It seems like every year is a bigger challenge than before,” Spathias added.
