@ Pac 5 Scout: You might be right, but only time will tell. We took one more on the chin tonight, losing to Mary Star of the Sea, 52-32, primarily because we once again couldn’t stop the run. I hope our defensive players can improve week by week.

@ron hopefully but coach Eric has had time to build a program I get it talent won’t also be there for Alhambra as it is not mater dei football but making playoffs and challenging for a almont league title is not unrealistic goal given the teams in the almont league.

@RV: Just a random thought. When a fan says we will be good IF our defense gets better after a surprising thumping it almost never happens at the high school level and more often than not gets worse. High schools can’t trade or sign new players so it’s up to the coaches to make their players better. Prepare for a bumpy ride.

@ A-Town: Perhaps a memory lapse has set in because the Covid-19 pandemic cost us nearly the entire 2020 high school football season.
Under the leadership of Eric Bergstrom and his staff, Alhambra went 8-2 in 2018 and 12-1 in 2019. Yes, those records were achieved with the quarterback who transferred to Monrovia, but, as I explained a short time ago, our new QB has done a good job so far.
As I see it, our situation is more like stop the run—or at least slow it down—and we’ll be OK.

@ Anonymous: Coach Bergstrom compiled a record of 20-3 with that quarterback kid. His record without that quarterback kid: 18-34.
The quarterback position was a problem for Alhambra most of the time between 2010 and 2017. In several of those seasons, we had to press into service players who weren’t well-suited for the role. For whatever reasons, quarterbacks weren’t flocking to Alhambra during that time.
We have played only two games since the end of the 2019 season, when we went 12-1, and you’re speaking as if we’re in the throes of a precipitous decline.
That quarterback kid made a personal choice in transferring to Monrovia, which he had the freedom to do. But our current quarterback, Michael Gonzalez, has done well for us; in just two games as our starter, he has thrown for 509 yards and five touchdowns.
In my opinion, the Moors will end up with a good record this season if they can strengthen their defense against the run. Our roster is a bit thin, but I know our guys will try to hang in there.
The Almont League has gotten off to a bad start this season, so we’ll do everything we can to take advantage of the opportunity.

Under Gil Alhambra had homegrown and was completing at a high level even when Lou Torres was coach they were ok. (Personally didn’t like the lou Torres hire but he did ok) now it’s been almost 9 years of rebuilding coach needs to build up a better freshman and job coaching staff so these kids are prepared and more 7 on 7 don’t see Alhambra in the passing circuit during the off season before covid

Ofcourse the record is going to be better with a top qb. Do most people think Bill Belichick is a good coach? Take away his years with Brady and he is 61-72 overall.

A coach is worth a lot more than their record, especially at the HS level where mentoring these boys to become men is so much more important

Rebuilding at a school where you coach the neighborhood kids and don’t recruit isn’t about becoming a powerhouse because it isn’t going to happen. It’s about being consistently competitive with whoever enrolls at your school and having your team represent the culture you instill. Unfortunately the recruiters got Alhambras best player in years to go to Monrovia with the grass being greener(playable) at Monrovia.

Convenient you don’t mention the fact that the QB illegally transferred to Monrovia. Are we all going to pretend like 3 of Monrovia starters should be at Alhambra and don’t live anywhere near Monrovia?

@ron how many years have we been waiting for coach Eric to turn the program around I get it he came in under bad circumstances but it’s been what 9 years and the best kid under his watch leaves the qb is at Monrovia. Really no progress one good year in 2019 aside from nothing and considering that the almont is down aside from Montebello every other team has been beatable. Schurr is not a powerhouse anymore, BG is up and down depending on the year with sg and keppel rebuilding no reason Alhambra shouldn’t be better.

ron Hawkins was a new school in the area when James took it over he built it up had The Who’s who of d1 coaches and then all these allegations came out and the easy there to do was fire him. He has done a great job at Inglewood they are becoming a UCLA pipeline with a lot of there players committed there.

As far as Matt the problem has been the administration not agreeing with his Twitter antics which they have to understand it’s a new day and age. And you can’t take away what he did at la Wilson and Sierra vista. Interesting to see if bishop Amat us going to be fine with the Twitter antics but if they want to play with big boys then Matt was the right guy to get them to the next level and complete with the big boys.

Not it at all why the coach left. Admins is why. But there’s two starters walking around school one who would of been a four year letter and the other a talented RB. Then there’s two kids (starters QB and RB) that transferred to Arroyo which nobody is gonna talk about because Arroyo doesn’t recruit.

@ Anonymous: Patience, my friend. Besides, Milvon James currently has a nice gig at Inglewood High School, and, last I heard, Matt Villasenor is over at Bishop Amat. (And who would ever want to leave Amat?)
In addition, these two individuals don’t appear to be purveyors of high standards when it comes to anything besides X’s and O’s and recruiting.
Milvon James and his friends at Hawkins High in L.A. City Section got busted for academic cheating and had to vacate a City championship as a result.
As for Matt Villasenor, he hasn’t stayed at any one place for very long and typically leaves an undesirable situation in his wake. Sierra Vista, the school he just left, got rocked in its 2021 opener.

Don’t sleep on South El Monte, either. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Eagles make the playoffs.
Teams will have to work hard to stop tailback Ryan Gordiano, quarterback Erick Cazarez, and wingback Marco Sarabia. Watch out if the Eagles can improve their passing game.

@ Anonymous & El Terrible: Don’t give up on Alhambra just yet; South El Monte looked like a pretty good team. The Eagles have some size up front and backs who can run. I believe Alhambra should be OK if it can improve on stopping the run; the Moors are developing a formidable passing attack.
In addition, don’t sleep on San Gabriel; the Matadors destroyed Mountain View in their opener.
But, yeah, it was a pretty poor start for the Almont League as a whole.

Don Lugo was supposed to be one of the tougher games on El Rancho’s schedule. Either El Rancho is the reincarnation of Alabama or Medrano scheduled a table full of cream puffs for non league games. Looking at 6-0 start but they will not be ready for league. Should have scheduled up with this team. They could have handled it.

It says a lot about the state of the Santa Fe program when a certain alumnus is teaching in the district, has had a prominent role in helping one program win a CIF championship and is currently coaching at another program in the district helping them turn it around and he did not apply for the Santa Fe job. When a program acquires a new coach, as in the case of Santa Fe, the very first game usually speaks volumes in terms of enthusiasm for the new arrangement. So, unless Summit of Fontana is loaded with future Hall-of Famers, this 34-0 plowing of Carl Agnew’s group doesn’t bode well for the future of the new guy, or the future of the Chiefs’ floundering program. One can only hope the school excels in academics, because it has clearly lost its way in sports.
