Johnson Too Much for Spartans

Vance Johnson rushed for 177 yards and scored four touchdowns for Cal

By George Hernandez

[Montebello] Cal’s Vance Johnson woke up in the second half scoring three of his four touchdowns bringing the Condors back from two scores down to beat Schurr 35-15, Friday night at Schurr high school.

The Spartans first drive was stopped on fourth down but the offense got right back on the field when Cal’s quarterback Daniel Torres threw a interception on the first play.

Schurr capitalized and quarterback Jesse Preciado pounded it in from two yards out to make it 7-0 after the extra point.

The Spartans again would capitalize on a Torres interception as this time Preciado found a wide open Matthew Salazar to make it 15-0 after a two conversion was successful.

Condors got on the board just before halftime when Johnson found a hole and hit paydirt from 34-yards out.

Johnson scored again midway through the third quarter making it 15-13 after a missed extra point.

Cal had back to back blocked punts on Schurr that put them in great field position and they capitalized both times. Once on a Jonathan Morales four yard touchdown pass to Michael Zuniga after Morales came in at quarterback in the second half and a 35-yard run by Johnson.

Johnson ended the scoring with a 68-yard burst through the Spartan defense with 3-minutes remaining in the game. Johnson finished with 177-yards and four touchdowns, he would have been over 300-yards if it wasn’t for penalties.

Cal quarterback Torres finished 4 of 9 for 36-yards and two interceptions. Morales after coming in relief went 2 of 5 for 7-yards and a touchdown.

The Condors defense was led by Anthony Castellanos who had three sacks and was all over the field.

Preciado finished 13 of 16 for 202 yards with a touchdown and interception and he also had 82-yards and touchdown on the ground. Salazar was his favorite target on the night getting six grabs for 90-yards and a score.

Schurr will most likely be on the road against South Torrance due to their rodent problem and Cal will go home and host El Toro.

Nice game for that young man. However my mother could rush for 200 yards against Schurr. They are a mid-level JV team at best. Ask him what he is averaging against the rest of the schedule the past two years. Not good.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. As long as coach baby is the DC there. The Spartans won’t do anything big. He is the weak link of that program.

At least Estrada’s defense is consistent and looks to be in mid season form.
