The story as I recall said the kids were using Tampico Rd off of Huntington Dr. South Pasadena had erected a chain link barrier at the top of the hill but as refugees will do they quickly made holes in it. After a So. Pas uproar they built a high block barrier that you could not dig under. Not sure what’s there today, probably a moat with a guard tower. BTW those homes in the hills of El Sereno especially the ones in the hills North of Huntington Drive are worth a fortune. My Aunt sold her old two bedroom bungalow for well over a million and a half bucks. The house was a shack but what a view. The views are grandfathered in so that they can’t be blocked by a neighbor building a mini mansion. The upshot is today El Sereno is keeping So. Pas folks out.

@ L.A. Dude: Interesting post. I was around when the City of South Pasadena blocked Monterey Road in the late 1970’s or early ’80’s. Until then, it had been the main thoroughfare between El Sereno, which is in Los Angeles, and the relatively posh Monterey Hills neighborhood of South Pas.
They justified the move as being necessary to improve traffic safety because of all the speeding, but I believe that wasn’t the primary reason.

You obviously can’t read. You’re blinded by the light. No one said they play a soft non league schedule. They are better than anyone in the DRL. Everyone else fights for a playoff spot. Get a clue and get a life.

Saying LS plays a weak/soft preseason is a pretty lame argument. You two need to work on your “spin” a bit more. And how is La Serna supposed to up and just leave the league? Just sounds like the other teams just don’t want to compete.

LS lost to Bonita in OT so i would not count them boys out. ER is scrappy and will beat CAL. Cal is ok but can’t win the big game. The last 2 no words for them. The DRL will be exciting this year.

I read years ago teens from El Sereno would walk to So. Pasadena High as it was the closest school to them as the crow flies. Racism is what it is even around here the city fathers of South Pasadena blocked the road(s) leading from El Sereno Hills into South Pasadena to keep out the riff raff and those streets are still blocked today. That is also the reason they stopped the extension of the 710 freeway at Valley Blvd so traffic would not get into South Pasadena, much like the billionaires block public beaches from the public in Malibu and Laguna etc. But not to worry South Pasadena will take El Sereno football players but they do have to take the long way around.

@ Anonymous: The Alhambra Thunderbirds Junior All-American football program has been defunct for years, and I haven’t seen or heard anything about a revival. Alhambra families interested in youth football have had to join programs based in other cities.

Young people living in El Sereno have typically attended L.A. Wilson instead of Lincoln High, which is located in nearby Lincoln Heights.
But, the attendance boundaries in LAUSD/L.A. City Section have been kind of blurred since the 1970’s. First, there was school busing for integration purposes, and then the PWT (Permit With Transportation) program was adopted in the late 70’s or early 80’s. The idea behind PWT was that students could attend any school in the district as long as they or their parents took care of their transportation to and from school.
    However, I get your drift.

Dear Anonynut, wrong, I am not an ER fan or have any stake on any other team I the Del Rio. I follow and support the Del Rio league because I live in the Area. You need to read what Del Rio Watcher posted because he is absolutely on point on what I was saying. Everyone here know full well who support and are the reason people hate on LS. Everyone in the league knows full well who the top dog is and respects them immensely. They’ve earned. You should learn from their example.

Saying LS plays the softest schedule in league is so idiotic – you should have your head examined my guy

Big Blue, Friday Nights has a point I do not see El Monte dominating like they did last year without Montoya (south El monte) or Reyes (mountain view/Los Altos) on defense. The year prior that’s what killed El Monte against Adelanto not having solid defense on defense. What happened to El Monte that year was a once in every 20 years experience. Arroyo is looking pretty good this year despite not having many dominant skill players.

I’d like to see somewhere that an ER fan said they would beat anyone or win league, etc. I don’t think I’ve seen that on this page anywhere, if so I’d like you to point it out specifically where.

    1. Don Lugo was a D5 team in 2018 and if I’m not mistaken played in the D7 finals in 2017, no one, not Robledo, Tim Peterson, Aram Tolegian, Escarcega had any clue Gano had walked away from DL, looks like the fell off a cliff.

    2. BG – Traditional rivalry that has really fallen off after Margarito Beltran left, you’ve heard of him right? This game not helping us much anymore, might be time to look elsewhere.

    3. Montebello – Traditional rivalry, just a few years ago they were a semi finalist, they beat St Paul, Another game we need to change.

    4. Sierra Vista – Took Monrovia to the edge just a few months ago, had D-1 recruits showing up all over the place, Villasenor ups and leaves a month later.

    5. Santa Ana – Covid

    6. Covina – supposedly good and we dispatched them.

    7. Norwalk – if any game was supposed to be the “cupcake” it would’ve been this one. Surprisingly they are 4-1 and might bring something to the table.

The plan was never for this to be a cupcake schedule, it might’ve worked out that way but it’s nothing we could control. I don’t think you’d find 1 ER fan who truly believes our schedule has made us battle tested. I just find it funny that some of you can’t stand to see a team other then LS get a little bit of media love. Let the games play out, do your best to beat ER by 100 and it will all figure itself out.

@Anonynut, who are you to educate anyone with your obvious bias comments. We know the playoffs system is different this year. You obviously don’t read into any comments made hear. Looks to me that El Rancho didn’t schedule weak opponents it just worked out by happenstance but your continue to spew your nonsense. Those games we tough opponents in previous years but things didn’t workout that way. Don’t blame ER for that.La Serna schedules it’s preseason based on their confidence of being a superior team in their league. Everyone in the Del Rio knows that. Get a life and get a clue DELETED!

@Anonymous(ashamed La Serna Fan right?) I believe you missed ER Fans point entirely. La Serna 1n 2019 played in division 6. El Rancho and Whittier in division 11. La Serna is competing against teams 5 divisions lower than themselves in the Del Rio and because of that they get basically a free pass to the playoffs. Meantime El Rancho, Whittier, Santa Fe and California have to slug it out for one playoff spot. When you look at it through clear lenses it is your analysis that is stupid. It is La Serna that plays the softest schedule of any Dei Rio league team by far because the games they play that count toward a playoff berth are against teams where they are favored by 4 touchdowns or more and are 5 to 7 divisions lower. La Serna can afford to schedule up in non league and they should. However La Serna is not really scheduling up, they are only playing who they SHOULD play if they were in a Division 6 type league. Move to the San Gabriel Valley, Moumtain West or Citrus 4 all local leagues that feature div 6 type teams and see if your team can walk the walk. But I don’t think LS wants to do that at all. Remember what Warren did to you OUCH!

    @Del Rio Fan!

Wow, I’ve read some dumb comment on here but congrats – yours takes the cake.

You know divisions are fluid this year since they are based on calpreps ratings? No one knew what division they would end up in prior to the start of the season, but teams definitely knew which opponents are projected to be stronger than others. ER took the easiest schedule they could find other than the Santa Ana game that never came to be (not their fault obviously). I will give them credit and say that they have been doing what they are supposed to be doing against lesser teams. I just take issue with teams thinking they are world beaters when they’ve only played inferior teams.

You also know that LS doesn’t control who they play in league. That’s already determined (duh) but at least the teams in league are head and shoulders above any preseason opponent that ER has played. Did you really think that was a strong argument to make? Again, let’s see some other DRL teams schedule Warren, Culver City, Bonita and Tesoro and see how they fair. Until then, just sit back and keep those fingers off the keyboard.

Check your facts next time man, it’s embarrassing taking you to school like this. Looking forward to a competitive DRL play this year.

@ Anonymous (talking about the talent at Alhambra): Yes, we certainly had a serious drop-off in talent after the 2011 season. (A young 2010 team, which went 4-6 in Lou Torres’ first year as head coach, improved dramatically and went 9-3 the following year.)
The AHS football program saw an influx of talented players who contributed greatly to our 2018 team, which went 8-2, and to our 2019 squad, which won the Almont League championship and ended up 12-1.
Noah Rodriguez, who was our quarterback both of those seasons, and our current QB, Michael Gonzalez, are Alhambra’s first two prolific passers since we had Darrian Cazarin in 2008 and ’09. We also had All-CIF receivers in 2018 (Raul Cortez) and 2019 (Vito Russell and Kody Chuang).
At running back, we haven’t yet gotten anyone quite the caliber of Anthony Brown or Dushine Smith, who both rushed for well over 1,000 yards in 2006 & ’07.
But, we got close with Salman Gurung and Lu-Ring Paialii in 2016. Gurung ran for just over 1,000 yards, and Paialii topped 900 yards; their efforts helped us make the playoffs that year.

@ Moor pride: David Keyes took over as principal at Alhambra High School in August. He’s enthusiastic and, as far as I know, fully supports both the academic and athletic programs there.
Mr. Keyes’ predecessor, Dr. Marisa Palacios, ran AHS from 2019 until last June, after serving as an assistant principal at both San Gabriel and Mark Keppel. She was highly supportive of the Alhambra football program before she moved on to the district office this summer.

Here we go… El Monte has a flash in the pan season and you wanna bang on your chest. Ok let’s talk facts did EM have out state kids? YES!
Did they take seniors from South El Monte, Los Altos, paramount and other schools? YES!
Facts are facts. Without those transfers you are the same average at best squad who can’t get out of it’s own way! I’m putting money on Mountain View beating you guys this year! Oh and maybe your precious Coach C left because he got reprimanded for all the transfer heat! Him versus some administrator… It’s the same story every place he’s been. Other DRL teams aren’t in the same division as LS so they should be scheduling the teams they are playing. The rest of the DRL are at division 9, 10 or lower. LS has been at division 5 and 6 which means LS shouldn’t even be in the league. They’re playing cupcakes in their league in your analogy.
