Game Night: Week Five

Teyondre Coleman and San Dimas face a big test in undefeated Monrovia. (Photo by Doug Brown.)

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated.

Thursday September 23

West Covina (2-3) at Charter Oak (3-2)

The Bulldogs have some players but it looks like they’re still a year away. Charter Oak did what it needed to do last week against South Hills. West Covina will hang around but Charter Oak gets the W.

Friday September 24

La Serna (3-2) at Culver City (2-1)

La Serna has been taking a lot of heat this year for a couple of non-league losses. Once Del Rio League starts the Lancers will still be the team to beat. However they’ll get beat in this one. Culver City is loaded with talent. La Serna won’t be able to keep up.

Culver City 35 La Serna 14

Hart (1-3) at Downey (3-1)

This isn’t your father’s Hart. The Indians are still a formidable opponent but they aren’t the dominant team that used to roll over everybody back in the day. Downey should have no trouble. The Vikings are coming off a big win over Cal. Vikes by two scores.

Downey 31 Hart 17

Norwalk (4-1) at El Rancho (5-0)

El Rancho has been the talk of the season so far. The Dons have crushed everybody in their path. Norwalk is improved however its opponents have been less than stellar. Their one loss was to San Marino 34-22. The Dons won’t drop one here. ER wins its sixth straight.

El Rancho 38 Norwalk 12

Glendora (5-0) at Diamond Ranch (1-4)

Diamond Ranch had a tough opponent last week against St. Paul and although the Panthers led at halftime St. Paul put it to them in the second half. Glendora is a similar team. The Tartans will pound it with Braydon Brus and eventually wear down D-Ranch. Glendora remains unbeaten.

Glendora 28 Diamond Ranch 7

Mayfair (4-0) at Northview (2-3) (Covina District Field)

Tough matchup for Northview. Mayfair is undefeated coming in and won’t be tested until La Mirada on October 8th. The Vikings need to keep the ball on the ground and try to keep the Monsoons off the field. Even then they could be in for some tough sledding. Mayfair heads into Suburban League play undefeated.

Mayfair 37 Northview 10

Monrovia (4-0) at San Dimas (4-1)

Maybe the game of the week. Monrovia is unbeaten while San Dimas has lost just once – to Bonita. The Saints like to pound it while the Wildcats like to air it out with Noah Rodriguez, Carlos Hernandez and company. It’s going to take some big plays to win it and Monrovia has the playmakers to do just that. But if San Dimas gets the ground game going and wears on a defense the Saints are not easy to stop. It could come down to the final play. Flip a coin for the winner. I flipped a quarter and it came up Monrovia.

Monrovia 38 San Dimas 35

Los Altos (1-4) at St. Francis (2-1)

This is a tough pull for the Conquerors. Let’s not sugar coat it, This one could get ugly. The Golden Knights are coming off a big win over Muir. Their only loss was to Damien. Great test for Los Altos before league starts but it’s one that will be almost impossible to pass. St. Francis rolls.

St. Francis 45 Los Altos 17

I think the MattV played head games with Damien. Amat did not look short handed and all their key guys were there. By saying they were down 15 starters they insulated themselves with a built in excuse if they lost. And if they win they can say “see we can beat Damien easy with our 2nd and 3rd string.” Win win.

@ Anonymous: Trinity Classical Academy is located in Valencia, and its varsity football team is currently 3-1. I’m hoping for a good game and an Alhambra victory on Friday night.

San Dimas fanatic I feel the same way brotha. These two teams are on a collision course this week. Two good programs duking it out. Got to love it! I also just want to see a good clean game with zero injuries. Both teams are definitely going to playoffs.

MVS said last spring they were going to start covering Amat. But I guess not since you are ignoring the biggest game in the area in awhile. I do find Amat’s coach Hagerty’s hiring of the boistrous Matt Villasenor the fired SV coach as odd as in the odd couple. While Hagerty claims never to read social media Matt uses it to boost his profile. Many say such overuse cost him. Hagerty said yesterday he knew nothing of MV yet gave the fired coach an interview, knew nothing about him yet hired him. I guess MV showed a lot of leg in the interview or sold him on his success and ability in luring good athletes to SV. I guess I’ll give Hagerty a call. To get a job at Amat sounds easy. The Damien -Amat game is big. Im taking Damien by 10 points.
From T. Peterson: We may cover it. I’m not sure yet. It depends on what kind of manpower we have this week. But if it came down to it I won’t cover it at the expense of say Monrovia-San Dimas. It won’t take the hits that the game will. It just doesn’t.

San Dimas Fans are so glad the Monrovia-San Dimas rivalry is renewed. Both schools have a long history together in the regular season and the playoffs. Looking forward to this match and hope its a shootout. I know there is mutual respect for each program. Its been too long. Good luck to all the players and coaches and hopefully we’ll have another classic.
