Game Night: Week Ten

Nico Iamalaeva Jr. and the Warren Bears face Downey this week in a classic rivalry. (Photo by Duane Barker).

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated:

Friday October 29

Schurr (6-3) at San Gabriel (8-1)

The Matadors were exposed two weeks ago in a 35-0 loss to Bell Gardens. Schurr has been on a roll since Almont League started. Spartans win the league title.

Schurr 30 San Gabriel 14

South Hills (0-9) at Glendora (9-0) (Citrus College)

Glendora finishes off a perfect regular season run. This one won’t be close. In fact it may get ugly early. Tartans win big.

Glendora 45 South Hills 7

La Serna (7-2) at Whittier (3-6) (California High)

La Serna made a Del Ro statement last week in a rout of El Rancho. The Lancers aren’t about to let Whitter get in their way of league championship. La Serna rolls into the playoffs.

La Serna 42 Whittier 13

Ayala (8-1) at Charter Oak (5-4)

Ayala has its eyes set on the Mountain West title. It won’t be easy. Charter Oak will come to play. But In the end Ayala prevails

Ayala 24 Charter Oak 14

Alta Loma (7-2) at Bonita (7-2)

If Ayala wins this game is for second place. If not one of these teams can earn a first place tie in the Mountain West. The Bearcats only losses have been to Downey and Ayala. Alta Loma has also only lost twice and will give Bonita all it can handle. Bonita gets it done.

Bonita 28 Alta Loma 21

Burbank (3-6) at Burroughs (3-5)

The Battle for Burbank is always a special game. This one is also key for Burbank which could secure third place in the Pacific with a victory. Burroughs has lost its last three games and doesn’t look like it has the horses to stay with Burbank. Bulldogs win and maybe get a shot at the playoffs.

Burbank 34 Burroughs 20

Warren (7-0) at Downey (8-1)

If you’ve never been to this rivalry game make it a must on your to do list. The atmosphere is electric and it’s what high school football is all about. Whether it’s at Warren or Downey the stands are packed on both sides. The scene is hard to describe until you actually experience it. This year will be even better because both teams are playing at a high level. The Vikings will try to knock the Bears from the ranks of the unbeaten. Downey may forge a lead early and will still be up at halftime. However Warren behind Nico Iamaleava rallies to win it in the fourth quarter. Whatever happens it will be something special.

Warren 38 Downey 35

Los Altos (1-8) at Northview (4-5) (Covina District Field)

Northview, after a big win last week over San Dimas, can wrap up the Valle Vista League title with a victory. Los Altos, even though its record doesn’t show it, has been competitive. The Conqs lost by just three points to undefeated Monrovia earlier in the year and to San Dimas by eight. They’ll lose another close one here.

Northview 24 Los Altos 21

The road to the playoffs getting complicated. A lot of teams seem to be having major Covid problems when the infection rates are dropping to all time lows in the SGV. Interesting. At this point it seems only fair that teams with infections that keep players home last week and this week should also be disqualified from the playoffs since they could get opponents sick. There is a certain amount of gamesmanship going on and I don’t know how much but it will be exposed in time and those programs should be severly punished for having their boys participate in a form of Astro trickery. Take for example Pasadena at Muir. Not much to gain by winning and an extra week of not having to risk players being injured and two full weeks to heal up and prepare for playoffs. Co-champions okay but….This is just an example not an accusation. Although I’am sure the principals that signed the letter attesting to covid were honest it still really benefits both teams not to play. Lets see how many games are impacted like this again on Thursday and Friday night.

@ Not: If it happens, it happens. However, the narrative that has been put forth about Coach Bergstrom and his staff not being able to “coach up” the Alhambra players is a completely false one.
The 2018 team which went 8-2 and the 2019 squad which compiled a 12-1 record were overwhelmingly composed of players who were freshman in 2015 and ’16. Many of them played on the freshman team, but some came out for football later on. We had very few transfers.
Coach Bergstrom took over the Alhambra football program in 2013, so if you keep the above facts in mind, it’s clear that he and his assistants coached those players up.

Wheres the Ranch18 talking about Transfers galore when you need him.. Crazy what 30+ transfers can turn your program into… I hope Downey wins and shuts that dad up ( Nico Sr.) on the Sidelines… also Why isnt he at bosco where his “Cousin” DJ went? Rumors were Sr. had a falling out with Boscos head coach? and gave him the boot.. like a true powerhouse program

Having seen both Warren and Downey in person I think both defenses are too good for that high scoring of a game. With Downey’s QB out I’d still put my bet on Warren though.
    28-14 Warren.

I was at the 2019 Downey-Warren game, and here’s the best way to tell you how wild it was: the capacity crowd was on its feet, yelling loudly for their respective teams, ONE HOUR BEFORE KICKOFF. Not even a CIF title game comes close to this thing.
