STOP SPREADING LIES!!!
@anonymous
I can agree with coaching being very important and Arroyo has had not only good coaches but staffs as a whole. So certainly that creates a good situation. But are those Arroyo coaches good because they have better and deeper talent? Are the coaches at the View bad coaches because they couldn’t over come the built advantages Arroyo enjoys? As far student population I’ll take your word for it that Arroyo is longer above 2,000 kids but down south there’s still talk of closing either SEM or Mt View because the numbers are so low. So while it may be true at AHS it’s even worse at the two schools down South.
Either way separating will never happen. The other schools in league will have to continue to take flyers on coaches in hopes they catch magic. El Monte did it but it did take way more than just coaching and El Monte kids buy it was magic none the less.
@ Forever: Your flair for exaggeration is unmatched. Alhambra has been placed in Division 14, and we’re happy to be in any kind of postseason bracket during this Covid-19 era. (I do say era, since the pandemic is closing in on its second anniversary.)
In addition, Alhambra is the No. 2 team from the Almont League, while Santa Rosa Academy (4-4) is an at-large team from the South Valley League.
I’d also like to provide a history lesson here: The CIF Southern Section opened the playoff “floodgates” way back in 1977, when the number of berths was doubled to include virtually all third-place teams as well as occasional at-large teams. This is not a new thing.
After being given up for dead, we’ll do everything we can to take advantage of this opportunity. It gives our seniors a chance to go out on a high note, and our underclassmen will get their first playoff experience. We’ll work on getting into a higher division later.
@Bergstrom forever Alhambra made the division 14 playoffs as the 2nd place team out of the Almont league. And is the 2nd seed in the division.
@anonymous if you’re saying Eric is resigning you’re either his wife or the guy that wants his job and thinks you can do a better job.
Good luck to the Moors and everyone else that made the playoffs.
Inglewood 106 Morningside 0. It would have been 108-0 but Inglewood missed the two point conversion as time ran out., the dummies. Any way there could be a teaching moment here. I remember when L.A. Wilson had a 100-0 lead on Lincoln at halftime and Lincoln refused to come out to play the 2nd half. Today Lincoln is a top seed in City Division 1 with a undeafeted season going. BTW a few weeks ago Lincoln beat Wilson 57-7 . Lincoln led 57-0 at the half but refused to grind them any deeper into the turf for revenge.
No said coach Eric is leaving Alhambra but his resigning as head coach of the football program
For their 4-6 finish, the Alhambra Moors were given an at-large berth in division 513, and will host powerhouse Santa Rosa Academy. All the naysayers take note: these aren’t your father’s CIF playoffs, where only league champions or those with winning records qualify; no, the floodgates are now open to anyone.
Agree that the enrollment numbers in the EMUHSD are not exactly even. The district has seen a significant drop in their enrollment numbers over the past 3-4 years. At one time, Arroyo’s enrollment was over 2200, it is now down to around 1800. Mtn. View and El Monte’s numbers were certainly affected by the opening of South El Monte back in 1993. Before that, El Monte had the highest numbers in the district-not Arroyo. Yes, Arroyo has some advantages, but coaching continuity-especially when the coaching is very good-still matters a great deal.
MVLHOOPS
Completely agree with the fact that the powers that be will never split up the league. But I can play devils advocate, one of the reasons Arroyo has been the consistent team over decades is because the sheer size difference Mt view and SEM are right around 1200 kids while Arroyo stands at 2300 kids that’s nearly double the student population. While transfers may not be a big deal in our league, open enrollment is another barrier for the other teams to contend with. Case and point Ernesto Camacho enrolling at Arroyo instead of Mt View where he was boundaried (if that’s a word). My point is it’s not just coaching. If you put Singiser at the view I’d imagine they aren’t winning very many league titles. It’s an impossible job to win at with all the built in hurdles. Arroyo has too many advantages.
@Monrovia HS, I hope you know that your star WR is planning on transferring to Warren after the season. I guess what goes around comes around. Good luck!
@ Comedy, Almont Realist & others: San Gabriel’s tailback, Robert Lucero, got hurt against Alhambra a week ago. Lucero managed to play the entire game; he carried the ball 30 times for 186 yards and scored three of San Gabriel’s four touchdowns.
I don’t know how Lucero was able to do it, because when he wasn’t running at full speed, he was limping around for what seemed like the entire second half. He took a pounding against AHS, so I’m not terribly surprised that he couldn’t play this week.
I just heard that Inglewood beat Morningside 106-0. Inglewood did everything in its power to run-up the score, sparking a fierce debate over the indecency of the act. I thought I had seen the worst possible when West Covina pounded La Serna 84-21 in a title game, but this just takes the cake.
As a teacher at Alhambra, there are absolutely no rumors or inclinations that Coach Bergstrom is leaving AHS. Just stop with the completely misinformed and downright false narratives.
I’m thinking some of the loudest hollering tomorrow morning is going to come from #1 and 2 seeded teams. Why? Because they will likely get to play wild cards. Teams CIF powers that be want to see in the playoffs despite not qualifying. Teams like Orange Lutheran- J. Serra- Serra Gardena-San Juan Hills-Damien-Oaks Christian- Notre Dame-Crespi-Hart-Charter Oak. Any top seed in Division 2 through 7 could face one of these wild card monsters in the 1st round. I believe a wild card invite will no longer be some automatic cream puff.
RE: Arroyo
To say that Arroyo will never leave the MVL is probably right on the money. I seriously doubt the EMUHSD will ever allow their 5 schools to be split up. Transportation is already a nightmare with all of them being in the same league-think how much worse it could be. While Arroyo has been the most consistent school in football over the past 40 years, that also comes with the fact that they have had only 3 coaches since 1980-and this is Coach Leonardis’ first year! He and his staff have done an incredible job with this group of kids. No football since November of 2019, a starting QB that had never taken a Varsity snap, a lot of talented but inexperienced kids on both sides of the ball, and a new head coach. They have a very fast and physical defense, and a multi-dimensional offense that has really come together. Most of the other MVL teams have had their runs-El Monte, Rosemead, South and even Gabrielino in the early 2000’s. But no one has been able to maintain the level of consistency that Arroyo has. Have they had some transfers over the years-sure. But so has everyone else! This group is made up of probably 98-99% of kids that have come thru their lower levels and are having great success on the Varsity. Who knows what the playoffs will bring, but they should be celebrated for their success this season.
I don’t doubt the kid racked up yardage but it’s LEAGUE not all season MVP. And SG played no one in the pre season anyway. Got exposed in a very low caliber almont league.
@Almont Realist SG went scoreless in 2 league games. They will have no one in the league MVP talks, Schurr QB. Led his division in passing yards his sophomore year I know this is a new year but that shows a lot. Also. who stopped him or Schurr in league ? Schurr QB is definitely a next level QB. Obviously not D1 but the kid can play. If not him one of his fellow teammates for sure maybe #3. By the way didn’t he have like 3-4 TDs last night against SG? Lol while SG could only find their own end zone?
MVL
5 teams from EMUHSD and one outsider.
District wants it this way for ease in transportation and scheduling. They fight all releagueing attempts
@almont realist
Please elaborate as to what did the SG running back do vs Schurr?
Oh yahhh didn’t play for some reason, so hell no he ain’t the MVP. Maybe if SGs team but not if the league. To add to it these are the last days of your running backs playing days. Kid is small and not fast…….
maybe Schurr’s QB and SGs running back will be working at the mall together since these are their last days of football lol.
El Monte is a nice surprise. Great fight from the kids and now they’ll be rewarded with a trip to the playoffs. Wish them luck in CIF!
Typical LS: When the truth hits the mark LS resorts to name calling.
@ron just give a couple of weeks Coach Eric is resigning
@? You are an idiot….the goal at L.S. every week is to win. If you knew ANYONE on that staff you’d know your suggestion is just as idiotic as you are. It’s ok to hate us just don’t lie to satisfy ur hate
@ Anonymous (the one talking about Alhambra’s head coach): Nope. Our morale was high after a hard-fought victory over Bell Gardens, and getting into the playoffs makes things even better.
Coach Bergstrom was already looking forward to next year; we have some promising underclassmen who will be returning. They’ve been improving, largely through on-the-job training during games this season since we had virtually no season in 2020-21.
To the programs lamenting their placement in the CIF rankings thinking it’s not fair saying our program is really not that good or our school is not that big so we should be in a lower division. If you are a head coach crying about your ranking I have a question for you. What the hell is the matter with you? Is having a chance to win in a lower division more important than your program moving up in rank? Is being able to say look we are #330 in California that great? You coaches that are crying over your ranking better take a long look in the mirror and see why are you are coaching. Is it to teach or are you coaching for a fake title for your resume. Don’t tell your team we are going to lose because the competition is to tough before you even hop on the bus. Corona Cenntenial one of the top teams in the country will be one and done more than likely. You think they are crying about their ranking and wishing they were in D8?
@ SG Green: Well, the three-way tie for second place in the Almont League has occurred, after Alhambra defeated Bell Gardens, 28-13, on Thursday night and Schurr beat San Gabriel last night.
Alhambra has made the playoffs as the surprise second-place team by beating the Lancers and then winning a series of coin tosses that were held on Friday. San Gabriel came out second-best on the coin flips and qualified for the playoffs as the third-place team. Bell Gardens lost out and finishes the season with an overall record of 4-5.
It pays not to give up, and it also pays to be lucky. By the way, thanks to Rich Whittington of Mid-Valley Sports for breaking the news to us!
Coach Jones showed why people at Alhambra are happy he is gone. Being able to recruit kids and then humiliate a team that didn’t have a coach until a weak before the season is the exact type of person you don’t want leading young boys into adulthood. There’s enough DELETED in the world and when you put one in charge of impressionable boys don’t be surprised when history repeats itself.
League MVP is the SG tailback. Kid has over 1600 yards rushing. The Schurr QB is just average. Nothing to dream about. He does play hard but these football days will be his last. He seems to be a good kid too but that can’t get you to the next level. Maybe he will be 1st team but definitely not league MVP.
@George C
While you may be correct, it’ll never happen.
Check these stats out, they gave up a whopping 6 points in league! Yes SIX! they out scored the league 246-6!
The second place team (Rosemead) which handled the other teams in league with ease was never even close.
Also, been harping on this, but very disappointed in SEM I only stayed for the first half then raced to watch the EM vs Gab game but there is just no change to their offense, no adjustments it’s 4 plays, all game, every game! The sad thing is they have some decent ballers which makes it Absolutely frustrating.
But back to the point, maybe the league can trade Arroyo for Keppel. Putting the knights in the Almont and Keppel in the MVL what say you?
Proud for the Lions, especially the senior players who dealt with their coach quitting on them a month before season, low numbers for a multitude of reasons, and were able to finish the year better than anyone expected and make the playoffs.
Schurr QB will take home the league MVP. Kid has been carrying that team offensively for a while. Seen when he was injured how much the offense struggled without him. Also, I’m sure the MHS coaches would agree 🙂 #3 is a baller # 2 is fast. Real fast ! #8 takes defensive MVP .
No, ARroYo GeTs ThE sAMe MVL kIDs As eVERyOnE ElsE. 10-0 beating up ok crappy teams. Just like Baldwin Park.
Arroyo will always be 1 or 2 in MVL and competitive in the playoffs because of the solid recruiting and the kids they get but they won’t leave the MVL.
@ anonymous. Schurr is nothing without their QB. That was proved when he went out for 3 weeks. Schurr doesn’t win league without #15. Doesn’t take away from #3 or #2 tho. Schurr just had the 3 best players in league .
Good job St. Paul. Thank god that QB transferred out to the ranch. He couldn’t handle last nights game. SP on the move. CIF here we come.
How about Inglewood dropping 106 on morningside new UCLA commit at qb had 13 touchdowns
LS tried . It was 10-7 at the half to a 40 point underdog. The close game game did drop them a few vital spots in Cal Preps. The dive worked.
New era for the Almont League with Montebello nowhere to be found, a three way tie for 2nd, and Schurr back on top… don’t under estimate the Spartans.
D2 might be the most interesting with Alemany, Amat, Sierra Canyon, Inglewood and Warren possible.
Number 3 from Schurr is legit! Does it on both sides of the ball! All league MVP
SG running Back don’t even suit up! So much for being player of the week In the biggest game
Might be time to move arroyo out of the mission valley
You people are so dumb thinking teams will lose a league game against a rival for hope to be in a lower division that grants zero guarantee of a championship. One division down does not make much difference unless you are avoiding playing mater dei
Schurr 39 – SG 0
So much for having a real running back.
Just before half 28-6 Rosemead up big. SEM once again can’t get anything going offensively. Also once again same 4 or 5 plays SMH. Rosemead is daring them to throw the football. This one could get ugly. It was 7-0 after 1, Rosemead exploded in the second quarter.
Big week in the MVL
Rosemead plays SEM, Rosemead can lock up the #2 seed with a victory, however are still in if SEM pulls the upset.
SEM is in a must win situation. Lose and your goin’ fishin’. Very disappointing season for the Eagles but they still have life.
El Monte controls their own destiny win and your in… lose and get your coins ready.
Predictions:
Rosemead beats SEM 34-15
El Monte eeks one over Gabrielino 20-14
I’ll be at the Rosemead SEM game giving updates.
The betters game to watch is Whittier- La Serna. A Cardinal win only helps La Serna’s chances in the play offs knocking them down to D4 or D5. A Lancer win means a D3 or maybe a D2 spot. For sure La Serna will play it’s 2nd and 3rd stringers. Is that enough for Whittier to pull a win. Cal preps has La Serna favored by 40 points In this scenario I take Whittier and the points all day long.
Looks like Alhambra did what they had to do to give themselves a slim chance of making the playoffs. SG vs. Schurr got even more interesting.
Coach Eric rides into the sunset with a win
Wow, really did not expect that out of Alhambra. Either SG wins, and tie with Schurr for league champs (not likely). More likely, Sg looses, Schurr become champs, and it’s a three way tie for second between: SG, Alhambra, and BG……. Just wow
I am first to admit, this is the lowest the almont has been, but it is also unusually interesting
