(Covina) – Charter Oak beat Bishop Amat in the Final to win the Charter Oak Big Lou Memorial Super 7 Tournament Saturday. The Chargers knocked off St. Francis in overtime in the Semi-Finals while Bishop Amat beat San Dimas. Here are a few more shots:
Charter Oak was led by returning quarterback Corin Berry and skill position players LaVar Arrington, Legend Lyons and Marquis Bradley. San Dimas, who’s offense is predicated on the run, had a great run to the semis beating Mira Costa, Norte Vista, Corona Santiago, Rim of the World and El Monte before losing to Bishop Amat on the last play.
@FBFan
Don’t worry about Lugo, you are the smartest person on the blog. I wish you had a team so we can’t make you eat your words. FBFan hide behind your fictitious name, remember your name is fan and that sounds about right.
That 5-6 workman year they had they gave up 40+ three times, 50+, 60+ and 81 in the first round to Savanna. They live and die by their offense and die more times than not. But with Arroyo going to be horrible, South bringing back guys that’ll be a good game, Mountain View not being able to beat them even though they probably got a top two team in the league with will finish 4th, Rosemead and Gabrielino nothing to say.
So a top 2 finish for EM in the MVL.
Lugo is far from quiet. Every 7on7 they do they nearly get thrown out for fighting. No class. Even worse they go 5-7 and their coach thinks they’re champions
Low profile Agree 100% the difficulty involved in improving a losing program. Yet some very good staffs have been successful
Looks like they just took Schurrs best player
The football culture of SGV is deteriorating before our eyes . The only route to success is 3rd or 4th place in Almont to get favorable seed in D13 or 14
We are talking about Workman here . Agreed this was probably the best Workman squad of the last couple decades . God only knows what’s happening there now as they brought back coach who was out of the game for longer than that.
I agree with your point that it’s difficult to change culture within a school. Administrators don’t have much of a clue either , hiring retreads , falling for hype , etc My point is that you don’t have to be great to look good now ; also did Spat change culture there ? Or did he have a few good players as you mentioned ? He left asap and Workman returned to the depths ….
You have no idea how hard it is to win at those schools, it’s easy to dismiss what they did. But it’s incredibly difficult to change a culture…
Lugo is especially quiet this year after being loud all off-season last year. Maybe they learned their lesson? Could mean so many different things
Key phrase in your analysis -in a terribly weak league –
This team you referenced was trounced by Rio ( (not one of their best squads ), and later had first round playoff loss. Lower levels of SGV which are now plentiful, have great difficulty in stopping sophisticated passing attacks . This is presumably because they can’t replicate in practice .
This is what I mentioned earlier with Nogales and their new QB from Castaic . They will put awesome numbers vs Keppel and Ontario , but to what end ?
Well El Monte Staff been together many years, winning league championships at places like Workman and Bassett! Workman???? Yes Workman had 3 or 4 very, very good athletes (QB went to Eastern Michigan I think, after Mt SAc ; but my info may be little off).. Workman had a very quick running back and wide receiver , during his Junior season, was All Everything and very high in National and State for most receptions. Great mover after receiving the pass. Also a fullback/ Linebacker who went on to play at Redlands. Smart Kid. Well in a terribly weak league, 3 or 4 very good to near great players (most likely would not be great as they were in Suburban League and similar) can dominate teams that suffer with weakness. EM Staff is very good; Great to know they competed well versus higher division teams. Spathias and Company will continue making Lions good
This tournament is a reminder that football is just around the corner! Good to see all the teams out there!
El Monte looked good, competed with the big boys. Surprised me.
How did Don Lugo look?
From T. Peterson: They lost their best receiver from last year to graduation but they looked good. They competed and they have a couple receivers that are going to step up. Quarterback looked good as well.
Who looked better than you thought
From T. Peterson: The one that really stood out as far as looking better than what I thought was San Dimas. As we all know San Dimas typically runs the ball and is not known for airing it out. But their quarterback Brandon Meredith played well and throws a really nice ball. Skill players looked good as well and they were solid defensively. Again, it’s only passing league but to advance all the way to the Semi-Finals in a passing tournament with the talented teams that were at the Charter Oak Tournament was very impressive. The Saints are going to be just fine. They may even open it up a little more. I’m sure we’ll see more wrinkles offensively.
What’s up with Nogales
From T. Peterson: Their quarterback looked pretty good but I don’t know if they’ll have enough weapons. They need a few more skill position players.
How did Muir look
From T. Peterson: I thought they looked really good. They have a lot of returning players and their QB transferred in from Arcadia. Right now I’d say the Stangs are the favorites in the Pacific.
Some teams looked much better than I thought!
