Thursday August 18

Chino Hills (0-0) at Glendora (0-0) (Citrus College)

Nice matchup to kick off the 2022 campaign. Chino Hills is coming off a 7-6 year overall but did advance to the CIF Division 5 Semi Finals before falling to Valencia. Glendora lost only once all year – in the CIF Division 3 Semi Finals to Apple Valley. Chino Hills will be a test, but it’s a test Glendora can ace. Tartans are ready for another solid season.

Baldwin Park (0-0) at Montebello (0-0)

Baldwin Park had a great season last year but the Braves did fall short in the playoffs and are looking for even bigger and better things this season. It could be a rebuilding year for Montebello. The Oilers will know a lot more after this game. Braves win a close one.

Arroyo (0-0) at Kaiser (0-0)

The last time we saw Kaiser they were getting blown out by Northview 42-13 in the Semi Finals of the Division 10 playoffs. Kaiser was 5-6 overall and finished second in the Sunkist League. Arroyo was a perfect 10-0 before falling to Claremont in the first round of the Division 9 playoffs. It’s a fairly evenly matched game to get the season stated. Kaiser has the home field advantage but that’s something the Knights can deal with. They should have just enough. Arroyo wins a close one.

La Serna (0-0) at Pasadena (0-0) (Maranatha)

Maybe the best game of the week. Pasadena has had a big summer with an offense that looks explosive led by transfer quarterback Indiana Wijay. La Serna hasn’t exactly been lacking either. Jake Long is back at quarterback and the Lancers are expected to have a huge year. Both teams can score. Pasadena scores more.

Monrovia (0-0) at Bonita (0-0)

Monrovia will roll through the Rio Hondo League. No questions there. But they do have a challenging non-league agenda. It starts right off the bat with Bonita. Expect a shootout. Both teams have a wealth of talent offensively. Monrovia’s defense makes a big stop in the fourth quarter and the Wildcats survive.

Northview (0-0) at Muir (0-0)

When was the last time Northview played Muir? Nothing in recent memory. Northview is set to defend its CIF Division 10 title and looks like it has the horses to do so. Muir has some good athletes for first year head coach Lance Mitchell. The problem for the Mustangs is that they are in the same league as Pasadena. Muir hangs around all game but in the end Northview has too much.

West Covina (0-0) at Alta Loma (0-0)

The Bulldogs got back on track last season making the playoffs and finishing 6-5 overall. Tough matchup against a Mountain West team that advanced to the second round of the Division 7 playoffs last year. West Covina will battle and could even come out with a victory with a break here and there. Alta Loma though is a tough hill to climb. In the end West Co comes up just short.

Alta Loma 24 West Covina 21

Schurr (0-0) at California (0-0)

Cal has had a really good summer. The Condors advanced to the second round of the Division 8 playoffs last year and are looking to make an even bigger splash this year. Schurr won the Almont last year with a perfect 5-0 record and then fell in the first round to St. Anthony in the Division 10 playoffs. Not a bad loss however considering St. Anthony advanced to the Championship game. Nice game for both teams to see where they’re at. Schurr is looking for a little payback after falling to the Condors 35-15 last year. Cal gets another win this year.

    MVL predictions
Arroyo- surprise surprise. The knights are big up front and very talented at the skill positions. They will roll through a down MVL once again.

SEM should finish in second place. They have several playmakers. Word is the Eagles have added a new staff maybe the new coaches can bring some stability to an inconsistent staff.

    EL Monte-
My wildcard team. Spathias has turned around a few programs kid should have an early buy in. Not sure if they’re good enough talent wise to compete with the Knights or the Eagles. Third for the lions.

    Rosemead-
Mystery team. Mum has been the word around Rosemead. So far all I’ve heard is rebuilding year.

    Mountain View-
My alma Mater is jumping with excitement. They’ve had some success in 7on7. New staff at least has the kids in a positive mindset. But the Vikings are one of those jobs where it’ll take some time to equal wins.

    Gabrielino-
Every year football numbers are lower and lower. They will bring up the rear in league this year.
