Schurr Shuts Out Arroyo

Efrain Martinez rushed for 105 hard earned yards on 15 carries for Schurr

By Tim Peterson

(El Monte) – Joseph Alvarado scored on a two-yard run early in the second quarter and that was all Schurr needed in a 7-0 win over Arroyo Friday night at B.L. Bergstrom Stadium.

The Spartans defense did the rest shutting down Arroyo throughout the night. The Knights had just one opportunity to score but a 28-yard field goal by Albert Lopez sailed wide right in the third quarter.

Arroyo quarterback Joe Reyes hit Ismael Ceja for 44 yards down to the Schurr 26-yard line and a penalty moved the ball down to the 11. But the drove stalled there and the Knights failed to convert on the field goal attempt.

Schurr’s only score was set up when Efrain Martinez took a pitch from Alvarado and threw a pass down the field for 45 yards to the Schurr 10. Two plays later Alvarado scored on a quarterback keeper for the 7-0 advantage with 1:34 left in the second quarter.

Arroyo turned the ball over once in the first half on a fumble. In the second half the Knights punted twice, missed the field goal and was stopped on fourth down with just over four minutes left in the contest at the Schurr 26. From there the Spartans were able to run out the clock.

Reyes completed just 4 passes for Arroyo, the longest being the 44-yarder to Ceja. He also ran for 34 yards. Ceja had 60 yards rushing on 60 carries.

For Schurr Martinez rushed for 105 yards on 15 carries and had the pass for 45 yards and Yahir Ledesma had 58 yards on 15 carries. Alvarado ran for 52 yards and the touchdown on 5 carries.

Schurr picked up its first win of the year improving to 1-2 while Arroyo fell to 0-3 on the year.

    @ Just Saying

You’re right man. I don’t mean to hate on the Knights. Work hard and earn it boys.

It’s FridayKnight Get Back Coach. He loves to dish it out but can’t take it. I’ll leave the little peon alone for a while. Remember, keep the kids behind the line!

Don’t rule out Spath and El Monte. By that time one might be playing their best ball and the other might still be struggling.

Relax anonymous, why you starting the hate. El Monte people would get all butt hurt when people would call them The transfer express, look at El Monte now. Arroyo is young and going through growing pains, but it’s homegrown growing pains, they will get better. So even if they do will the regular season and make the playoffs stop hating. El Monte people should not even speak.

Checked this game out this week.
Arroyo quite obviously isn’t the Air it out team this year. They’re more of a ground it out style. Only they commit far too many penalties to sustain drives. Qb is more of a runner than a passer and no deep threats to stretch the field. No real stand outs to speak of. Defense is solid but this is t the knights year. Come league I can definitely see SEM and Rosemead having a shot at beating them this year. The good old MVL is pretty down this season so far. I’ll be checking out EM next.

Arroyo won’t lose a game in league. MVL is terrible. They’ll be fine.

Who won’t be fine is FridayKnight Get Back Coach. He’s been real quiet. Now that Arroyo is 0-3 we won’t hear from him until they’re done beating up on the bottom of the barrel MVL teams.

Hey assistant to the assistant, this is good for you and your sorry team. You’ll be placed in a way higher division than you should be and might actually make a run in the playoffs.

Don’t worry Get Back Coach, your confidence will be boosted again shortly. In the meantime kiss your ring and kiss our behinds. Especially since you should have been in D11 and not D12 that year and should have never got a ring anyway.

Enjoy your crow pie. Don’t reply. Again. Don’t want to hear lame excuses.
