(Monrovia) – Monrovia has named Jose Casagran as its new head football coach Athletic Director Randy Bell confirmed Tuesday.
Casagran was the head coach at Roosevelt from 1998 through 2002. In five years he compiled a record of 43-14 and won three Eastern League championships.
He then took several years off before taking over as the head coach at South Gate before the 2012 season. Casagran coached South Gate for seven years and led the Rams to the playoffs every season except 2016 when they finished 3-7 overall that included five losses by forfeit.
South Gate lost to San Fernando in the Division II Finals in 2013 34-32 and also reached the D-II Semi-Finals in 2014 before falling to Hamilton 42-23.
Casagran led the Rams to the D-I Semis in 2017 and 2018 where they lost to Dorsey and San Pedro successively. He stepped down after the 2018 season with an overall record at South Gate of 51-35 with one CIF Finals appearance and three Semis appearances.
Casagran takes over for Chris Williams who resigned after five years. Monrovia went 8-3 last season and lost in the first round of the CIF Division 8 playoffs to Northwood 63-56.
@ SD: There are City Section teams, and then there are City Section teams. We’re largely in agreement when it comes to the football programs in Divisions II and III.
However, there are some really solid teams in Division I. Birmingham, Crenshaw, Dorsey, Franklin, Eagle Rock, Garfield, and Roosevelt have all fielded strong squads in recent years.
Can’t wait for Casagran and staff to shut all of these idiot arm chair coaches up. City section my ass! He can flat out coach! Honestly can’t wait. Remember i said this.
City Coach? City football to CIF football is like t- ball to hardball. He better come with help from CIF coaching. Monrovia must be desperate.
Casa is a good guy and building a good staff. That program will is in good hands
@Matt V. – this isn’t the same guy from Amat, right? The self proclaimed Guru! LOL!
So if Monrovia goes to D12 and gets a ring it’s nothing?
Great hire! Monrovia lucky to have Casagran
Blah blah blah.
Casagran. We cannot wait to meet you coach.
LeRoy you’re a lame. Get off the boards I wouldn’t even let your comments go through.
As for Casagran he has a better resume than the last HC and a lot of these “head coaches” people think are gurus.
Casagran is a great coach and this is a great hire. He has turned programs around with far less talent and support. I’m rooting he takes Monrovia football to the next level.
city section*
Yea section section is the equivalent to D12 football in the southern section.
@leroy not sure if know about the city section Jose had a good run Roosevelt and turned south gate football around. His not flashy and is about hard work no bs.
@peterson he bringing his staff with him
Another retread bum. Monrovia will remain mediocre for years to come
I’ve read that Chris Williams may be a top candidate for the newly vacated La Mirada job, as he lives very near the Matadores’ campus.
