Feel the earth bounce at Minutemen Field

T-Minus-40 Days until “The Mid Valley Classic”

Good Afternoon!

Don’t know what it means in the Pacific for 2010 but one of its best players is Hoover wide receiver/safety Dymond McRae…and you won’t hear enough about this guy.

Is it news to say the Dodgers are cooked? Where’s Jolbert Cabrera when you need him?

Looking forward to interviewing Bishop Amat quarterback Rio Ruiz this coming Tuesday on “The Mid Valley Sports Show”…

Really late to the party on this…but if I was young, had the dough, and the patience of driving downtown Pasadena every day…put Maranatha on my list of schools. The campus is gorgeous and the set up of the football field, built over a parking lot, is amazing.

“I’m telling you,” said Minuteman Henry Rodriguez. “At night when the lights are on, the stadium is full this place takes on a D-3 (small college) feel.”

Not all former Temple City players are on staff at San Marino…Former Ram Tim Cantrell is coaching defensive ends for Maranatha.

I love The Ranch…(El Rancho)…First, they fed us. SCORE! Not exactly gear, but a nice advance on Mid Valley Karma… Plus we got to hold onto our payday coupons from Burger Death.

Dons HC Rick Zepeda was busy, so we didn’t connect right away but we checked out a freshman toss between ER and St. Paul. I initially counted at least 125 people in the stands (in July) for a freshmen toss.

That said, Peterson and I wait for Zepeda on the practice field outside of Don Memorial Stadium and a stream of folks and players exited past us…It never seemed to end, I believe the numbers might have been closer to 200.

“Baseball and basketball play all the time,” said Zepeda. “But they all come out for football.”

Something you can’t drill out of us…Something that is just inside of us…Last week I’m running a tricycle relay race with a group of four & five year olds…One boy quickly points out to me; “But there’s no winning. No one can win…”

Later it prompted a huge discussion about; “Why is there no winning?” and “Why can’t anyone win?”

So we run the relay race…the boys team finishes first…and this five year old raises his arms and brings them down in victory; “Yes!”

Without the consultation of Dr. Phil, Dr. Joyce, or even Dr. Doolittle…my assessment is; you can’t change what is naturally ingrained.

The boy had been part of a soccer league…that didn’t keep score…a Little League that turned off the scoreboard when it got out of hand…Because there’s no winning. No doubt this was reinforced at home… and I sure didn’t say a word to counter it while he was at church… but I thought it was interesting that “Winning” was so important even when he had been told and demonstrated; “There is no winning.”

Do with it what you like…But life is full of winning and losing…failure and success…you cannot legislate it out of our nature…It is in us…

Is San Dimas ready to defend its CIF title? I asked the Saints Kevin Kolbeck, currently in France if football was on his mind:

“Oh football has been on my mind a whole lot. I’m really exited for two a days, its just three days after i come back. But yes football has been on my mind quite a bit so far…”

Of course the first vote was mine in the current Mid Valley Sports poll about JV spring football…and early on it was getting its butt-kicked…However, now it seems to be holding its own.

Those that voted “Yes” drop me a line…let me know what your thinking is on this.

Last Add Maranatha: No, you are not feeling an earthquake when the turf bounces under your feet at “Minuteman Field”…but for a while you’ll think you’re feeling an earthquake.

“Football Rush Week” is coming…August 23-27.

Stay thirsty my friends…
