Big Third Inning Sparks Cougars

(Azusa) – Azusa Pacific used a six run third inning to break it open and cruised to a 7-1 win over San Francisco State Thursday night at the Cougar Baseball Complex.

Isaac Mendez went five and one-third innings for Azusa Pacific to pick up the victory. Mendez, 1-1, on the season, hit five batters on the night and walked two, but only allowed one run and three hits while striking out 10.

The Cougars were down 1-0 in the third inning when they struck for six runs. Ethan Toyama singled and Cade Marshman doubled to the gap in right-center field to drive him in. Will Medina walked and Spencer Rasmussen singled to center to plate Marshman. Omar Lopez and Carson Collett followed with base hits to score two more. Jeffrey Castillo then popped up to shallow right field but the ball fell off of the second baseman’s glove and two more runs scored. By the time the dust cleared it was 6-1 APU.

The score stayed that way until the eighth when Castillo reached on an error and after a Toyama single, he scored on a base hit by Marshman. Marshman had two hits and two ribbies on the evening.

The Gators only run came in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Antonio Nanez. However they had the bases loaded and could only come up with one run.

Nathan Shinn started for San Francisco State and went four innings and allowed six runs and six hits. The Gators used three pitchers overall.

After Mendez, Zach McCorvey finished up the sixth and Alfredo Frey closed it out with three scoreless innings. The Cougars pitchers fanned 13 San Francisco State batters overall.

Azusa Pacific had nine hits in the contest. Rasmussen joined Marshman joined with a pair of hits.

The Cougars improved to 3-7 on the season with the victory.
