Montview League Preview 2010

Montview League

1.) Azusa Aztecs

Head Coach: Joe Scherf

Staff: Matt Muncy DC, Robert Beltran, Gary Hart, Paul Chavez, Ray Ochoa.

Last Year: 11-2

Last 5 Years: 35-22 overall, 23-7 league

Last Playoff Appearance: 2009 Semi Finals: Lost San Dimas 50-24

1st Down: Aztecs 21-4 in last two years.

2nd Down: Scherf feels this is the best team he’s had.

3rd Down: Azusa beat Monrovia to win the SGV Shootout in July. Some people think it matters, some don’t.

4th Down: Keep an eye on WR Abraham Ochoa, QB Jose Nunez and receiver Desmond Reed (no relation to THE Desmond Reed).

Game Plan: It looks the Aztecs are King in the Montview. It’s just a matter of how far they can go in the Mid-Valley.

Non League Schedule: at Bell Gardens, Ontario Christian, Gabrielino.

2.) La Puente Warriors

Head Coach: Brandon Rohrer

Last Year: 8-3

Last 5 Years: 20-33 overall, 15-15 league

Last Playoff Appearance: 2009 First Round: Lost Paraclete 45-0

1st Down: Rohrer got the Warriors back on track after a brutal 2008.

2nd Down: LP has field turf, new stands, great facility.

3rd Down: A second place finish in league could land the Warriors in a home game.

4th Down: Garrett Hrey is gone after a three year run at starting quarterback. Jimmy Jacobo is the heir apparent. Running back Jose Perez is a beast. R.J. Gutierrez and Pedro Candia are both back on the line.

Game Plan: The Warriors appear to be back and other than Azusa, they should be cool. Second looks about right.

Non League Schedule: at El Monte, Northview, at Wilson.

3.) Workman Lobos

Head Coach: Scott Morrison

Staff: Shane Hile, Anthony Hile, Robbie Bartlett

Last Year: 6-5

Last 5 Years: 20-30-1 overall, 12-18 league

Last Playoff Appearance: 2009 First Round: Lost San Dimas 48-6

1st Down: Morrison lands at Workman after previous stint at Damien. How effective can he be in first year?

2nd Down: Lobos were shut out twice in league- vs. Gladstone and Azusa.

3rd Down: Lobos lost a lot of key seniors. Quarterback is Val Cervantez.

4th Down: Receiver George Portella should be an important cog in the Lobos attack. Steve Miranda is a stud up front.

Game Plan: Lobos could finish anywhere from third to fifth. But Morrison gives them an edge.

Non League Schedule: Keppel, at South El Monte, at Montclair.

1st Down: Quarterback Paul Flores has taken his act to APU. Andres “Peanut” Uribe looks to fill his shoes.

2nd Down: G-Stone made the playoffs last year after some struggles the last few years.

3rd Down: Joseph Herrera returns to carry the rock- over 400 yards last year.

4th Down: A fourth place finish no longer guarantees a playoff spot.

Game Plan: Flores had to carry the Glads at times last year. Uribe will need some help if the offense is going to go.

Last 5 Years: 20-33 overall, 16-14 league

Last Playoff Appearance: 2008 First Round: Lost San Dimas 67-12

1st Down: Another school with a fantastic stadium. The fans need to come out.

2nd Down: Keith Locklear did resign as the Girls basketball coach- not the football coach.

3rd Down: The Dons need a win over Azusa or Gladstone.

4th Down: Erik Perez looks like the guy at quarterback.

Game Plan: Knock off one of the Montview elite and take care of business with the rest. Will that be enough?

1st Down: Giants won two games in 2008 but dropped back down to one last year.

2nd Down: Is it hard sharing a field with Diamond Ranch? Just a question.

3rd Down: First year in the Montview after moving over from Valle Vista.

4th Down: How many Pomona grade school football players end up at Ganesha with D-Ranch and Pomona right down the street?

7.) Bassett Olympians

Head Coach: Aubrey Duncan

Last Year: 4-6

Last 5 Years: 8-41 overall, 3-27 league

Last Playoff Appearance: 2004 First Round: Lost Cathedral 42-25

1st Down: Leon Ward was let go, and another coach came and went. Bassett finally settled on Duncan.

2nd Down: Duncan is also the coach of the LA Amazons- (Women’s football team).

3rd Down: Ward does a great job with the East-West All Star game.

4th Down: Same old story. When you lose games you lose kids. A winning season – especially with a nice facility- would put Bassett right back in play.

Game Plan: Should beat Duarte but a sixth place finish might be the best they can hope for.

Non League Schedule: at Keppel, vs. Mt. View, Marshall.

8.) Duarte Falcons

Head Coach: Lavelle “Tip” Sanders

1st Down: “It’s a lot better than last year!”- Sanders.

2nd Down: It is indeed but Falcons have a long way to go.

3rd Down: Sanders had the kids pumped at practice-lots of hitting, hooting and hollering.  The right attitude is there.

4th Down: Ronnie Lynall, a transfer from Monrovia is battling for the quarterback position. Victor Roman, who has been out since spring, is also in the mix.

Game Plan: Stay the course and EGBOK. (everything is going to be ok).
