Game Night – Zero Week

This Weekend’s Games

Thursday September 2

Ganesha at Montclair

The Giants have some talent offensively in Terminate Francis, Antoine Paulo, and Julian Reyes. They need to find a way to get into the end zone.

Jose Ruvalcaba will be asked to shore up a defense that allowed 377 points last year.

Ernesto Sorenson will return at quarterback for the Cavaliers who went 3-7 in 2009.  Sorenson has some receivers to throw to in Nick Guzman, Jacob Pedroza and Manuel Chagolla.

Running back Rudy Aguilar plays linebacker as well along with Ulysses Couret.

Montclair can score but has a hard time keeping teams out of the end zone.

Montclair dominates.

Valley Christian at Tesoro

Valley Christian returns eight starters on defense and offense. But the Crusaders do have a new quarterback and are returning from an 8-4 season.

Tesoro finished 5-5 a year ago but hails from the brutal South Coast Division. Keep an eye on defensive end Sean O’Grady. He’s a good one.

Tesoro has too much.

Friday September 3

Charter Oak at Glendora (Citrus College)

A showcase of two bright quarterbacks in Travis Santiago of Charter Oak and Chad Jeffries of Glendora.

Santiago led the Chargers to their second straight Southeast Division title last season and Jeffries is a highly touted senior after a fantastic summer.

Dennis Rufus returns at wide receiver for the Chargers. He will garner most of the attention from the Tartan secondary.

The question for Charter Oak is if they can they find adequate replacements for players like Adam Muema, AJ Powell and Keith Smith.

Woody Woodward should be Jeffries favorite target.

Charter Oak finds a way to win.

Los Altos at El Rancho

The Dons should make some noise in the Del Rio League and it starts in Zero Week.

El Rancho will run the ball with Art Franco and Ronnel Lone. Franco saw most of the carries during the season but Lone will be in the mix this year as well.

Quarterback Troy Campos balances out the attack as well as receiver Freddy Garcia.

First year Head Coach Jim Arellanes has had to deal with several transfers including Ryan Longoria to Cathedral.

Los Altos has quarterback David Poyet and running back Scott Tibbs returning from last season to spark the offense. Frankie Avalos and Jared Covarrubias anchor the D.

El Rancho has too many weapons.

Norwalk at Los Alamitos (Veteran’s Stadium)

A marquee game in zero week.

No secret that the Lancers will run the ball. Elijhaa Penny will get the bulk of the work for an offense that had over 5,000 yards rushing in 2009.

Norwalk faces a perennial playoff team in Los Alamitos that returns Nick Richardson and Dylan Lagarde.

Richardson gained nearly 2,000 yards and Lagarde takes over full time at quarterback.

This game has classic written all over it. Norwalk shocks the OC.

San Gabriel at Muir

It could be a track meet. Both teams can score.

Muir has game changing skill players in Kevon Seymour, Dai Dai McFadden, Jeff Davis and Karl Holmes.

What makes the Mustangs even scarier is the size of an offensive line that includes Cameron Palmer and Shawn Wilcox.

A new era begins at San Gabriel with Jude Olivia taking over for Keith Jones as head coach and sophomore Eric Alvarez stepping in for Isaac Valdez at quarterback.

Mats expect big years out of receiver Mark Covarrubias and running back Arthur Brown.

San Gabriel keeps it close but McFadden is the difference.

Ontario at Arroyo

Ontario struggled last year going 1-9 over all and 0-5 last year in the Mt. Baldy League.

The Jaguars do return a senior quarterback in Christian Salcedo.

Arroyo is looking forward to a huge year. Steven Rivera and Mikey Vasquez should do some damage against the Jags D.

Arroyo rolls in the opener.

Arroyo 38 Ontario 14

Covina at West Covina

The first time the teams have hooked up since 1999. In what you would think would be a major rivalry is actually a rarely played contest.

West Co is loaded – one of the favorites in the Southeast. We like George Johnson, Chris Solomon and B.J. Lee. We fear Maurice Dupleasis.

Covina will counter with the Billy Livingston- Remontay McClain connection but it won’t be enough. Bulldogs feast on Colts.

West Covina 31 Covina 14

Rowland at Baldwin Park

Good early season test for both teams. It’s even nicer when they don’t have to face each other again in the playoffs.

We know about the Braves and Wardell Crutchfield III, Demetrius Jackson and company.

Michael Ball and Leonardo Freeman will have their work cut out for them.

It won’t be decided until the fourth quarter. Baldwin Park comes out on top.

San Dimas at Bonita

The Smudge Pot is always huge. Usually the momentum is allowed to build. This week it’s in zero week.

Bonita had a big mountain to climb before quarterback Garrett Pendleton went down with an injury. Now it seems insurmountable. Greg Spathias will take over for Pendleton. He got in some work in the scrimmage against Damien.

San Dimas has a new quarterback as well in Modesto transfer Codee Watts. Dillon Corona, Jordan Taylor, and Theo Darlington give the Saints plenty of options offensively.

Bonita will win this game eventually but not this year. San Dimas wins fourth straight Smudge Pot.

San Dimas 34 Bonita 21
