Temple City — Day two of the Holiday tournament at Temple City and Duarte High School. Teams who won yesterday advanced to the championship bracket, and those who lost moved to the consolation bracket but still had a chance to place in the overall brackets.
Game One: San Gabriel 58 Anaheim 51
The Colonists had a better showing Friday at Temple City High School as they got two guards back in their starting lineup. The offense kept up with San Gabriel as the two traded baskets throughout the first quarter. Neither team could create separation, as no lead was greater than five points. The Matadors went into intermission up 29-25.
Anaheim tried to get aggressive on offense as they tried driving into the lane. Still, the shot attempts didn’t fall, and San Gabriel was able to capitalize on the defensive glass and get into transition to score to keep their lead throughout the second half.
The Colonists did come within three points with less than five minutes left in the final period. But as the game started to come to an end, the Matadors were able to close the game out on free throws.
Game Two: Temple City 79 Mt. View 31
The Rams were too much on both ends of the floor as they jumped to a 28-5 lead after the first eight minutes of play. The Rams press defense forced five steals, and when the Vikings broke through the defense, they went 1-15 from behind the 3-point line. The Rams went into halftime up as many as 30 points and went into the break up 47-10. The Rams could take their foot off the gas for the final 16 minutes of play. Big man Justin Allen led the Rams in scoring and rebounds with 10 points and 17 rebounds.
Game Three: Los Altos 57 Santiago 55
The best game of the second day was between the Conquerors and Cavilers. Both squads traded scoring blows from inside the paint and behind the arch. But, the Conquerors’ 3-point shooting was the better of the two as they converted 4-5 to start the first quarter. Jay Rodriguez and Kevin Keshishyan each hit one from deep, giving LA a 12-2 lead after the first three minutes. The Cavilers were able to respond and closed out the first quarter on a 5-0 run, giving Los Altos a 21-19 lead.
The second quarter was tighter than the first, with four lead changes and three ties. Both teams’ defenses smothered the offense, forcing turnovers, but neither could convert on the mistakes. Santiago’s Jorden De La Mora was the go-to scorer for the Cavilers in the first half, as he scored 16 points to give his team a 35-34 lead at the break.
Los Altos was the first team to score the opening basket to start the second half, and they didn’t look back, as they were able to build a lead off the backs of the defense, which forced key turnovers that led to easy baskets. Keshishyan then closed the ball game out as he converted all five free throw attempts.
